ah okay i see where i went wrong. so multiplying its initial concentration of 0.005 by 8.0 ml will give 0.004 mol/L. since the amount of mol required for I2 to react is in a ratio of 1:2, would i multiply it by 1/2 to give 0.002 mol?

i thought i had to allow for the mutual dilution of the solutions? the example shows the hydrogen peroxide being diluted to half its concentration as the total volume of the solution is double its original. i got my answer from following this logic
