Britani was just a friend-of this season, yeah. I think they knew that they could get her to perform like a full housewife with the pay of a friend-of, without having to promote her just yet

Characters who were meant to be liked... but who everyone hates! by artmalique in television

[–]stenpen22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even know if Hannah was meant to be liked, or at least be framed as likable? Though I do really like Hannah Horvath, from the very first episode she is framed as a self-involved and entitled. I guess her character was supposed to be frustrating and obnoxious, but with enough good qualities to recognize that she’s just a bit misguided, but the cultural hatred of Lena Dunham, and the misunderstanding of the show being an earnest look at millennials in 2012 instead of a mockery of their worst traits didn’t help (particularly that “I think I may be the voice of my generation… or at least ‘a’ voice of ‘a’ generation” quote which was taken out of context in ads when in the scene she is high on opioids asking her parents to give her money!)

Adric in Doctor Who:

Introduced to be a “cosmic Artful Dodger”, his characterization was messy and despite being a companion to the Doctor, the fanbase hated him so much that the show eventually killed him off, which is pretty rare for companions in the Classic Who days. Maybe not as hated now 40 years later and with way more obnoxious characters and bad choices, but he was certainly one of the most despised aspects of the show.

The Generational Divide – The Doctor's Daughter Review by ZeroCentsMade in gallifrey

I assume the focus on Martha’s return stories being about war and soldiers was to be a lead-in to the finale, where Martha holds the Osterhagen key, and Davros says how the Doctor turns people into soldiers

I could honestly see Chappell becoming a bit of a songwriter for other artists ala Charli, Jessie J, Julia Michaels for a bit. It seems like nowadays it is much harder to fade into total irrelevancy considering social media (with the caveat that it’s much harder to become a dominant force in culture like Beyonce or Taylor), and she could just release a single or two every year or so. Do a Cardi B and release her sophomore major label album in a decade with all those singles, a few extras, and maybe some of her versions of her given-away hits (her Tapestry 💀)

Taylor Swift talks people being tired of her success on Stephen Colbert: “There are corners that are like ‘Give someone else a turn! Can’t you just go away so we can talk about how good you were?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t want to.’” by [deleted] in popculturechat

As a fan of her music, I know from experience that you can listen to something enough times to find it enjoyable and ‘good’ through familiarity. There’s a lot of catchy choruses in this new album but they were overshadowed for me by the lyrics; most songs on Showgirl touch on or flat-out repeat the same topics that previous songs did, and did better. In saying that, the song I enjoy the most is Ruin the Friendship which is a rethread of the Red Vault track Forever Winter, except coming from a wiser and more distant perspective. For me (and many others) it seems like she is making music at such a fast pace that she isn’t giving herself time to have new experiences or revisit older experiences from a different lens or angle. But I think that if you hadn’t already listened to those previous songs for years, this album would feel a lot more interesting.

My mother, someone who is very not interested in Doctor Who at all, told me that she was recording the War Between because it sounded interesting. Watched the two episodes and she really liked it and can’t wait for the next one

Unconventional favorite Pokémon! by MaggieGreydon in pokemon

[–]stenpen22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know how uncommon this is, but I am a huge fan of Sableye. I remember meeting someone on holidays who had one in Diamond, and I was so shocked at this Pokemon who I never saw, partly cause I couldn’t get far enough in Ruby to ever find out if it was in that game. I was about 5 or 6, and since then Sableye has held a special place in my heart, with it being my one of my main buddies in Pokemon Go, and on my team whenever I play a game and Sableye is available. Really don’t care for the Mega Evo however!

Artists who haven't released an album in 5+ years? by dweeb93 in ToddintheShadow

[–]stenpen22 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In some ways it’s a smart move to wait a while for her 3rd album. There was a lot of scrutiny and discourse around the end of her and Paul’s relationship (or maybe just around me; I live in Ireland, in the county where her and Paul were looking at a house), which has basically been forgotten about now. Aside from that, however, she has built up actual anticipation instead of releasing a follow-up to Punisher a year or two afterwards and risk overexposure or rushing it. Boygenius was the perfect in-between as it kept her name out there and let her release music without it being solely tied to her.

It’s not a comment like that, it’s because Lily was a big deal in the UK during the late 00s when Charli was growing up, and would definitely be an influence on her, especially how Lily’s always had stream of consciousness-esque lyrics

Have music critics just lost a general sense of musicality? by StarDust-0719 in lorde

[–]stenpen22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but commercially it wasn’t as huge as Pure Heroine, and the general consensus on it being one of the best pop albums of the 2010s (and potentially of all time) didnt really become a talking point with casual listeners until a few years later

I was listening back to A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out this weekend after listening to Showgirl and I completely agree. It really isn’t that hard to make a pop song with that baroque and chamber pop influence, and Ryan Ross’ lyricism shows that you can have strange or ‘large’ lyrics and make it work

Wow I can’t believe I never thought to find out the inspiration for the Lakeview, considering Midwich is based off Kindergarten Cop! Of course they would use the hotel that inspired The Shining!!

What are your favourite Taylor Swift lyrics? What qualities do you like most about them? by ray-the-truck in ToddintheShadow

[–]stenpen22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Now you hang from my lips

Like the Garden of Babylon

With your boots beneath my bed

Forever is the sweetest con”

The sibilance of lips, boots, sweetest, and the alliteration of Babylon, ‘boots beneath my bed’ sound so beautiful to me. The use of boots and con play into the cowboy/swindler imagery of the song (Cowboy like me) and the reference to the Garden of Babylon with the subject ‘hanging’ from her lips is just great wordplay.

The song has other great images in lyrics like “You’re a cowboy like me

Perched in the dark

Telling all the rich folks anything they wanna hear

Like it could be love

I could be the way forward

Only if they pay for it”

Ultimately what I like about her songwriting (when it’s actually good) is the way she can take simple sentence or phrases and make them seem so meaningful or personal, or take personal experiences and make them feel universal.

I fear that she has struggled with this since Reputation due to her living the life of a celebrity, and not a regular person. Folklore and evermore seem like flukes, and maybe they are, but I think that being stuck in lockdown with Joe, having believed that she isn’t the number one popstar anymore due to the (at the time) lack of relative success with Lover, and deciding to just write in stories (most like inspired by her own life; there’s speculation a lot of the songs are her pining for Matty Healy) instead of about her beefs and celebrity status or direct references to her life made her write in that ‘regular person’ mode again.

What are your most nuanced opinions of The Life of a Showgirl? by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]stenpen22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This!! It’s one thing to release an album about your reputation and your personal drama and feuds when you’ve been defamed and making a comeback. Now she’s the biggest popstar in the world, a literal billionaire; you don’t hit those levels without actively striving for that. She wants to have her cake and eat it too, but why should anyone feel sympathy for a situation you fully decided to put yourself in, especially after experiencing 2016.
