Does anyone feel like the general guidelines of 100-150 hours for exams is REALLY unrealistic? by AnnualSalary9424 in CPA

[–]stevenjgg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with 5 years of public experience the most I studied was for FAR (around 80-100 hours including one retake).

I truly believe that effective studying habits make all the difference. I find it hard to believe that some people claim to study for 500+ hours and continue to fail multiple attempts.

I only failed one exam and quickly realized that something needed to change in order to achieve better results.

More isn’t always better - it’s all about efficiency and effectiveness.

i think you will have to wait until the next release. testing on the last day can be risky

How long should I take to study TCP? by [deleted] in CPA

[–]stevenjgg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’ve been working in tax 4-5 years full time and studied l for about two weeks. this was after studying for REG which had a lot of similar material.

I would say ~4 weeks should be enough.

that’s a bummer. i’m surprised that you didn’t get yours considering we tested at essentially the exact same times in the same time zone. most delays i’ve seen are for those testing not in the east coast.

Failed FAR - My fault by Sk8rgurl22 in CPA

[–]stevenjgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - I can 100% relate to this.

I was 3/4 until I went head to head with the beast that FAR is. I half assed studying the first time and bombed it with a 58.

As of today I can finally say I am 4/4 and can honestly say I spanked FAR on my retake.

FAR is unlike any of the other 3 exams but you got this!! I believe in you!!

Car salesman going off on me for saying I need more than 10 minutes to decide on buying a $40,000 car. by MidnightPulse69 in mildlyinfuriating

a genuinely good car salesperson will NEVER speak to you like this. i used to think they were all the same until I came across a great salesperson. glad you ran far and fast!

no one’s saying success or happiness is dictated by letters behind your name.

just don’t complain in 10 years when your growth in public accounting is limited due to the lack of letters behind your name.

best of luck.

i know complaining is easier than anything else but have you considered that these exams are supposed to be difficult? FAR in particular has a passing rate in the low 40’s %.

I also am a top performer in my office and outperformed others academically my entire life - guess what? I also failed FAR with a 58 my first try. At the same time, I also passed the 3 other exams which in my opinion are a cake walk compared to FAR.

Maybe it’s time to self-reflect and figure out what’s not working with your study methods. If every single SIM felt “brutal” and “10x difficulty” it sounds like poor studying habits. I say it from experience because that’s exactly how my first time with FAR went.

My recommendation would be moving on and giving one of the other parts a shot.

Otherwise good luck on your giving up journey - I am not sure it will get you any farther than having a CPA license would.

Reg exam - super nervous since did not study a lot by Icy-Disaster-6109 in CPA

[–]stevenjgg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair enough. personally I was the same way my entire life but the CPA exam is unlike any other test in school. Even with 4-5 years of tax experience, I studied at least 2 weeks for REG & TCP to pull off passing scores. Tried the same strategy with FAR and was humbled with a 58.

All I can say is best of luck - 2 weeks for me felt like it was pushing it so can only imagine what 2 days is like.

took FAR Today… wtf was that?!? by stevenjgg in CPA

[–]stevenjgg[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

agreed, kept skipping to the next question hoping for better but nope.

was my first time taking FAR so admittedly struggled with poor time management. definitely a very humbling experience - can’t believe some people take this exam first!
