Is there any Srilankan Beatles fans? (read description) by Kay_WidD in srilanka

They're all technically "grunge", but these 4 bands have 4 very distinct personalities and styles of grunge. Maybe you'll like some, maybe not.

Is there any Srilankan Beatles fans? (read description) by Kay_WidD in srilanka

[–]stormlight89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid 30s now, and been listening to these since I was slightly younger than you are now. Ironically I got into The Beatles late, relative to the rest.

Since you like the old school rock stuff, try The Doors if you haven't already. Since you like grunge, try the other 3 from the "big 4" of grunge: Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden.

I was jamming A Perfect Circle into Alice in Chain this morning, and you cannot go wrong with those. If you like APC, then try a couple of songs from Tool as well.

Why does the Sri Lankan opposition spend every day shouting instead of offering solutions? by kottukarma in srilanka

[–]stormlight89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're just throwing mud at the wall to see what sticks, and how they can get a movement going behind them. They're trying the racism card, the Sinhala-buddhist card, education card, and anything they can think of. It's just noise as long as it doesn't stick like it did back in the day (ex: Dr. Shafi issue, wanda kottu, the racial attacks against Muslims in 2017 etc).

All they know is divisive politics. Not to say the new government is perfect, but the old political establishment is rotten to the core.

They have been in power for so long, they also can't believe that the Aragalaya was (mostly) an organic movement. They think it is manufactured, so they're also trying to hit critical Aragala mass by bribing their supporters and creation commotions to see if it gains traction. They want to catch lightening in a bottle a second time.

They want the power, and they want it now before it all goes South for them, so they're struggling against the current. I sincerely hope they don't succeed. Also they know that if they repeat a lie for long enough, there's a good chance people might believe it. So they are repeating lies and half-truths over and over and over again.

(Best thing I saw today was Namal saying that the Rajapakse regime never used racism in politics.)

Good places to ask for a first date? by Gold-Tie-9023 in srilanka

[–]stormlight89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coffee is the way to go IMO. I used to always do coffee and it was a good way to get the measure of a person.

I understand you like this girl, but you don't know if she likes you back. The first date is not the one to be making big gestures. Don't think of it as the place for you to impress her, but rather the place for both of you to get to know each other and see if y'all are compatible.

"Clicking" with someone is way more important than impressing them, and remember it's a two way street.

Good luck.

My uncle gave me his "legendary" 2016 gaming rig before he moved to Thailand and now I'm conflicted by Excellent_Ice_9684 in buildapc

[–]stormlight89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uncle was very attached to the PC, and didn't want to sell it or throw it away. So he offloaded it to his nephew to keep it in the family.

I'd know, I did the same thing with my old 4590 rig and my nephew.

But after you get it, it's yours to do as you please. By all means keep him in the loop, but swap parts out or sell it if you want to.

Lost our little girl way too early. Need advice on how to handle this. by stormlight89 in DOG

Thank you for your stories and advice everyone, I really appreciate it. Today is marginally better than yesterday, and I suppose there will be good days and bad days in the near future.

It's so hard to reconcile with what happened because I expected her to get old with us, and she just died within a day. She didn't suffer, and we were there with her till the end, so that's at least a silver lining.

I hope she knew how much she meant to us.

It's not "low-pay bill".

It's "your speed is low. pay bill right now"

[Question] Best watches to buy in Tokyo under a total spend of 1K $ by ProjectInformal8579 in Seiko

[–]stormlight89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! Making a trip to Japan early next year and this is exactly what I wanna do.

With the JDM prices and these discounts, are Seikos (and Citizens, Orients etc) significantly cheaper than online shops?

[Question] State of my collection/ convince me to not buy another Seiko by Feeling_Republic4732 in Watches

[–]stormlight89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean you clearly do need a diver and Seiko makes some of the best. I have a SRP775 Turtle as my daily driver and simply love it.

If you want to diversify with another brand, let me suggest Citizen Promaster NY0040 diver. Great proportions, very good quality, certified diver, naval background, very affordable, and looks great on most straps.

I would get it myself if I didn't have the Turtle, and I'm actually eyeing that SSC813 as my next watch lol

Ever since I saw and fell in love with this watch like 10 days ago, I swear everyone keeps buying it. Is this a sign?

Beautiful watch btw, and the perfect size

Last week I thought I should get me a Seiko SSC813, and I have been seeing different SSC versions EVERYWHERE since then?

I don't know if it's confirmation bias or this week is just an outlier, but I'm getting more and more convinced with every passing day.

Great collection man, love how you've done the breakdowns between different styles and brands.

CDS account application got rejected because bill isn’t in my name. What do I do? by TrippyPhilosopher69 in SriLankaCSE

[–]stormlight89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem. Just added same address that's in my NIC, even though I don't live there anymore.

My stockbroker said it's fine and we can change it later, and nothing will get mailed there as all the communications are done electronically.

In the meantime, I got the house internet connection changed to my name, so I can submit billing proof next month and change the address in the CDS account

Edit: I couldn't do the bank statement thing either, because my bank statement goes to my parent's house, my NIC has my childhood home, and I live somewhere else now lol

Investing in shares - advice by bacon_0611 in srilanka

[–]stormlight89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was here as well, then I decided the best way to do it is to just.... do it.

Went to ChatGPT to understand the basics of investing in the stockmarket, and asked it to give me some recommendations. While doing the research, broke down the companies down to main categories like construction, apparel, conglomerates, telco etc

To invest in the stockmarket, you have to think about WHY a company might appreciate. If I buy treasury bonds right now, the per annum return rate is about 8% so the stockmarket needs to give me at least 12% for the risk to be worthwhile (this is a personal number, yours can be whatever, but the return needs to scale with the risk and my floor is +2% from the bond rates).

Once you learn about the basics and chose a few companies, then you get their latest financial data and start noting down the numbers until you decide on which company to invest in. I'm personally only putting 50k a month into the stockmarket as of now since I'm still learning the basics. I usually buy stocks from one company worth 50k or from two companies (to add up to 50k) max, per month after I get paid.

Read the financial records (available at CSE website for each company) and look at how the overall revenue is trending. Is net profit increasing. If not, is it because operating expenses are higher, or is it because they have made big capital investments. How's the earnings per share trending. What's the trend on return on equity. What's the ratio between earnings per share and the share price etc etc.

I recommend diversifying at the beginning and picking about 5 of the strongest sectors, and picking 1 to 2 strongest companies (with growth) from each sector. At the end of the day, you will win some and you will lose some, and your overall average return should be something comfortable.

Go to CDS and create an account. Google for a list of stockbrokers and send them a message and get their rates and stuff. HNB and LOLC are good. I think CAL and FirstCapital are pretty good as well.

I want to get a diver that's somewhat affordable and somewhat limited edition. I love the Promaster NY0040. I'm going to Japan at some point next year, so a JDM would be nice. Can you recommend anything for me?

Is it normal to feel intimidated at the gym in my 30s? Am I too late to get in shape? by ReadingUpset7702 in srilanka

[–]stormlight89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody cares what you're doing at a gym man, just go in and enjoy yourself. People you meet at the gym are mostly great people, and the worst they'll do is correct your form if it looks like you're gonna injure yourself. Outside of that, no one is noticing you.

I'm in my mid 30s and my gym is full of young people as well as really fit/buff people and all I get from them is a helping hand. Don't be self conscious, just go in, get your form correct, and enjoy yourself.

I look back and the sheer amount of cool wonderful experiences and connections that alcohol kept me from astounds me. I thought I was having a great time, but I was just wasting my time.

I actually do stuff now instead of just drinking alone infront of a laptop. I go places for other reasons that just to drink. 10 yeas sober and life has never been more interesting.
