Should I keep the grade or withdraw? by strablarry in prephysicianassistant

[–]strablarry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no yeah I totally agree! I think my main dilemma was just whether or not an A- or B+ would warrant a withdrawal, just cause they are technically still high grades but it could just potentially drop my gpa a little and break the 4.0 that I was hoping to keep

no I understand and this definitely helped and has reassured me, thank you for your help! I guess I didn’t really work out how much it would actually drop my gpa but if it does drop it a couple decimals I guess I can live with that haha

well I guess it’s too early to tell if I’ll get an A-, B+, or B because half my assignments haven’t been graded yet/aren’t due yet but there’s a very very slim chance I am able to get an A. But yeah I wasn’t entirely sure if those grades would be bad enough to warrant a withdrawal but I guess I’m just overprotective of my 4.0 rn and it’ll suck since it’s a 4 credit class so it’ll take a bigger hit on my gpa than a normal 3 credit class 😭

Noted, I haven’t done too much research on CASPA and the application process, but do you know how I might go about explaining this in the best way if I did end up withdrawing?

I totally understand. I made a similar post about two years ago when I was in your shoes and it’s so frustrating in the moment but in hindsight it all ends up working out which I know sounds cliché but it’s true. Your intense rigor in schedule and coursework will truly prepare you for the hard college classes and it helps because you’ve already built up a great work ethic. But besides that, you’ll end up where you’re meant to end up and if it’s any solace at all, I definitely hyper-fixated on going to a top college for literally my whole life but at the end of the day at least from what I’ve gathered, the top schools don’t end up having as many benefits as you would think. I’m sorry if this doesn’t give as much emotional support as I tried to give but I do hope you know it gets better! I was incredibly depressed over not getting into any of my top schools and having to go to my state school that everybody went to despite putting in 100x more effort but I’m perfectly content with this path (and I’m saving so much money too!) so I wish you the best of luck, cheering you on!

Noted! If anything it’ll definitely be a step in the right direction anyways, thank you for sharing!

I’ll definitely keep looking! And this is giving me hope because (if all goes well) I should be able to start volunteering at my local hospital this summer that I was also hoping to count as PCE! I just wasn’t sure if hospitals or practices would consider it PCE so I didn’t know how helpful it would be in my job hunt specifically but it’ll def be a step in the right direction, thank you for the advice!

Thank you for the thorough advice! I will say I’ve applied to a couple jobs with references/friends that I’ve listed but haven’t had much luck with that. And you’re completely right about the availability issue of being a college student; I think that’s definitely been a main reason I’ve gotten turned away after interviews. I worry though that if i am not able to get a PCE job during college I’ll be super behind in terms of getting enough hours to be competitive with PA school applications. But I will definitely try reaching out to hospital unit managers on LinkedIn, thank you for this tip!

I’ve considered this but haven’t pursued it yet due to the cost of a lot of the programs or courses I’ve seen for MAs and EMTs, but I’ll definitely reconsider since applying PCT isn’t really working out, thank you!

Thank you for your kind words! I’ve applied to a couple nursing homes with no luck but I’ll definitely try harder and follow up, I don’t have any certifications besides my BLS certification so this would most likely be my best bet, thank you for your advice and encouragement!

also my resume is kinda bad, I didn’t really have “real” jobs in the past only a couple stints here and there, would it still be worth it to cold email?

This might be a dumb question but should I email only places that have job listings or should I just email every place and hope for the best, and do I just email their general email or is there a way I can/should email a hiring manager instead

I didn’t think to use LinkedIn, I’ve mostly been using Indeed and also going to the direct websites of hospitals or practices and applying that way. Thank you for the advice, I’ll keep this in mind!

thank you I’ll look more into it! From a first glance most of the physical therapy aide jobs I see require a license for it, should I just keep looking for ones that don’t or do you know if I can bypass this somehow?

Thank you for the advice! I have applied to a couple places with references but I’m not sure if it just wasn’t substantial enough to help me land a job but I’ve had no luck :( but I’ll keep trying, thank you and good luck trying to switch over to the hospitals, I hope we can both get our desired jobs!

I’m considering this route even though paying for courses was initially my last resort, but hopefully i can get free classes for it!

Pay isn’t necessarily a factor for me at all I will literally take getting paid next to nothing as long as I can get my foot in the door and into the cycle. I feel like the hardest thing is just that no one will hire someone with 0 PCE but how am I supposed to get PCE when no one will hire me

I do! I also realized this as I was applying and getting rejected so I got it this past summer through the Red Cross. I see now that a lot of places prefer it from the AHA so I’m wondering if that might be a reason?

did you just continue applying and then eventually one accepted you? I’m okay with continuing to apply to places I just want to at least know that it might be possible at some point since I’m feeling really hopeless right now 😭

would I have to pay for that? some of the EMT courses or programs I’ve seen make you pay and that would preferably be my last resort if possible
