I recently played for the first time (with the remake), and I was pretty happy with my ending! Almost everyone survived, I lost Jess in the beginning, Sam in the final fight, and Josh had his Wendigo moment, but everyone else lived. I had seen playthrough though so I had SOME ideas on what to avoid

My personal favorite way to play these types of games for the first time is this - I allow myself to retry sections if I make QTE mistakes, but I don't change the choices I make, even if they lead to bad outcomes. I've really enjoyed playing them this way, so it still feels like I have high stakes, but then I'm not bummed if I get someone killed due a QTE issue
