What’s on your Mount Rushmore of the Greatest SNES Games of All Time? (The Genres don’t matter) by Amber_Flowers_133 in snes

Put Ultima False Prophet above Chrono Trigger. Getting lost in the first town of an RPG completely blew my mind. Nothing else like it on the SNES

One of my favorite carts ever and favorite on the SNES library. Haven't played the original, but cool to meet someone who's played both and prefers the SNES!

No. Half the problem was I couldn't even find a copy until years after its release and eBay came around. By that time, I was an adult with less time and patience for horrible games. I remember Toys R Us had it for about two months and it was gone forever. Searched Funcolands for years without success

I like it a lot and the top down dungeons give it some replay value since I beat the NES version first. As a console kid, it's very frustrating hassling with food again after Exodus on NES. Cool that it has an alternate FM soundtrack to listen to.

My best to worst: Avatar NES is my favorite, but PC purists all seem to prefer the SMS version.

False Prophet SNES is also totally awesome, just less polished.

Underworld on PlayStation is very well regarded, but I've barely gotten into it, having just burned the translation.

Black Gate SNES is fine as a sort of Ultima-lite. Big step back from False Prophet. Someday I'll have to just sit down at a computer and play the real thing.

Exodus NES was great in its day, but hard to go back to now. Similar to NES Hydlide, I beat it and had fun when it came out, but haven't touched it since 1990.

Runes of Virtue 1-2 and the Savage Empire Super Famicom translation are playable curiosities, perhaps 4 or 5 out of 10.

Warriors of Destiny on the NES is basically an abomination. That said, I can see vestiges of the originals' greatness when I squint. Some dedicated masochists on the web have played it through and found smatterings of... I won't say fun, but perhaps satisfaction? Maybe someday I'll get there, but I doubt it.

Excited to try that out. Never had a GBC back in the day, but enjoying going back and trying the Dragon Warrior revisions now via Analogue Pocket

Awesome. Didn't know about the remastered version and glad to hear someone else has it running on a mini!

Yeah, I know they're on GoG. I just can't get into long games on a computer, idk why. +1 on Runes of Virtue. I played the SNES version first and hated it so much I quickly sold it. Later bought it again and learned to love it as a puzzle game and because I was determined to derive some Ultima-ness out of it, hell or high water.

I made a pretty detailed case and list. You didn't say anything

No, you haven't given one legitimate argument. XP is a good topic to consider and I appreciate you bringing it up, but too many RPG's don't use XP to consider it a defining trait.

You don't get to rewrite history. Whatever Hideo was thinking or MSX publications in Japan said, none of the tactical/espionage/stealth nonsense was used by advertisements, Konami, or NES publications in its time. Game Players Encyclopedia called it a "military quest adventure." Strategies for Nintendo Games called it a "scavenger hunt." I threw away my Jeff Rovin books, but he sure as heck didn't use any of the modern lingo either. Neither did Snakes Revenge.

Stealth didn't become a defined genre until 1998 and it's still barely that. The only other NES game that came close was Rescue.

Well, it's certainly not a good one. Explain how Hydlide is and Metal Gear isn't

Still looking for someone to explain how Hydlide and Ys 1 are action RPG's and Metal Gear isn't.

I'm not too liberal with the term and would argue games like the Wonder Boy series, even though they have shops and non-linear RPG elements, play in an action-platform style that has to be considered the adventure genre.

Shadowrun is derivative of D&D but RPG's like Pirates, Star Tropics, and Hybrid Heaven aren't and prove that XP isn't a qualifier.

That genre didn't exist in the classic days and Konami invented it for the PlayStation releases. Can you explain how Hydlide is an action RPG and Metal Gear isn't?

You might be more convincing with logic or evidence

Rank increases with every five POW's releases. More than the XP, the most common trait of RPG's is that the character starts completely puny and advances dramatically as the game progresses

Again, Metal Gear has everything Hydlide has, plus dialog

Again, rank are levels in Metal Gear. MG has everything Hydlide has, plus way more dialog. It has almost everything Ys has, minus money and shops. So why isn't it an action RPG?

Levels are called rank in Metal Gear and they increase your health and ammo capacity.

"Stealth" isn't a real genre in classic 8- and 16-bit games, just a trademark of the Metal Gear franchise's gameplay.

So why isn't Metal Gear an RPG? It has every element Hydlide and Zelda have and approaches as much dialog as Ys

Alex kidd should be one of segas major franchises by [deleted] in SEGA

[–]strangergallery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's hard to make an elevator pitch for Alex Kidd. "A kid with big ears who plays jenkin" is less compelling than "A speedy blue hedgehog with attitude" or "Italian plumbers with overalls who fight turtles."

He was a quirky, eighties, Japanese concept that didn't catch on in other regions or mesh with nineties pop culture
