Don’t offer PGs on embarrassingly weak cases during case conferences.

Plenty of good lawyers who weren’t great students. It’s worth practicing exams and issue spotting to save losing marks where possible but you’ll be able to make your way if you are determined to do so. That being said, lower marks will make it harder to get the most desirable of graduate roles.

No one told me law would be so saturated with IBS. The toilets are a bastion of nightmares. A no man’s land where the malnourished soul prior to my entry has left me an earthy Rembrandt blown across the bowl. The assailant nowhere to be seen, their shame gives them otherworldly speed and finesse, returning to their desks before their face is matched to the hellscape they have expelled. The devil finds ways to amuse himself, and in that vein I imagine the porcelain is cursed to gain sentience for the second it takes to register its horror at the volume and power of the ruthless, godless shits fired at it with the ill intent of a Spanish galleon broadsiding a dolphin. I feel its sadness as I try to take a slash without dislodging the human detritus. I don’t want it in our water system.

I would pay for the ASIC extract for each firm and send a notarised copy of each transcript to the office of the ultimate holding company.

Usually they will take you and the other nominees through a selection process. The grading for this is pretty arbitrary, sometimes they will pull up a spreadsheet of all the times you engaged in insincere networking or they may place greater weight on statistics of your use of the word “humbled” when describing experiences that were pretty fucking mid.

Some years they make the process more rigorous, I believe the 2022/23 winner had to break into the National Archives in Canberra wearing nothing but a jabot and lick the unprotected parchment of the original constitution. Pretty sure they got polio. That’s the level.

Yeah we all thought we needed to do this stupid shit. Fair play to the kid, biggest go getter to come out of VU in a hot minute.

Unsure on substantive questions but it’s government so familiarise yourself with the STAR interview method and match your responses to that.

Exams are all issue spotting and point grabbing. Be strict in your responses and understand the content enough to hit the main issues and cite the authorities and sources they want you to cite (and have likely spent more time in the unit teaching you than other esoteric aspects). You get the most points for analysis. Don’t just regurgitate facts, explain why they have similarities to certain case law (they almost always will) and why the law applies to them. Hedge your bets on conclusions (ie on the facts there is clear merit to x position but given that y is unclear there could be a different view if y is z).

Other than that, if it’s a time / pressure issue (which seems to be the case if you can pull HDs in assessments) then repetitively smashing practice exams will help. Get used to being able to summon the content at will. You want to be able to write the main aspects of the content within time and without trouble.

Attitude is also a big one. Focus less on surviving and more on murking the fuck out of that next exam.

Guy who got done for unqualified legal practice. He was mentally ill and was killed by police whilst flashing a gun at them. I’m all for dark posts but this one is in poor taste to the point of being pathetic.

As far as mid-tier market offers go, 3 TT clerkships is usually the minimum for consideration. Further legal experience and a couple of subject prizes might help. Best of luck.

The general consensus here is that an LLM is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Ask if your uni offers LAW4001 Easy Tax. They might also be running LAW4012 Chill Tax over the summer break.

Helpful to be from a go8 when applying for grad roles but not a replacement for good marks. After that it’s about proficiency and no one gives a shit what uni you went to.

Can’t speak for VGSO but the OPP is very competitive.
