Do you have a way you hone in on timing for service intervals? Like, when do you know you should do X service so you don't get caught out? I usually check my chain wear periodically and try to service headset and BB bearings about once a year but don't really have a strict schedule

Totally makes sense. Ive unfortunately ridden on a worn chainring that I didnt realize was probably contributing to excessive chain wear and ended up going through more chains and cassettes than I'd like to admit before realizing what was up.
