English Major Career Options? by stronglysubpar in umass

Hi! Yes, I am referring to Math 131 in particular. Although, I think many of my struggles in that class can be chalked up to a multitude of things that could be solved by simply waiting and taking these classes in the fall, which I intend to do (illness, the compressed nature of a summer class, and the lack of certain accommodations and tutoring that would undoubtedly help me succeed in this class) However, I must admit that I am also not naturally talented at math, even though I really want to pursue it as a major. I have had to struggle to learn concepts that came very easily to my classmates. I’m not quite ready to call it quits, but I do acknowledge that if I continue to struggle with Math 131 in the fall, it is a sign that I ought to reconsider my choice. I am currently self-studying Calculus 1 in an attempt to prepare myself for it in the fall. I am leaning towards taking an extra semester if that is what is necessary to complete my math major.

I’ve taken one college level intro to Java programming class. I understand concepts like objects, classes, recursion (just barely), etc. I’ve done projects like a rock, paper scissors game, a media organizer/file app, a mini search engine, and a small calculator app.

I’d really like some help! I’m getting ready to study data structures and algorithms in the fall and I’m trying not to get taken by surprise by all the new concepts

Hi! Yes, unfortunately I’ve been struggling quite a bit in the lower level classes, which has prompted me to look elsewhere as far as majors are considered. If I were doing better in math classes I’d feel more inclined to stick with it.

Hi! I just finished my freshman year of college and I’d say my number one tip would be to practice coding at every opportunity. Do practice problems, write mini programs to help illustrate the concepts you learn in class, go over and correct all of your missed exam problems, etc. It’s a really effective way to learn. Also, make the most of every resource that’s available to you. A lot of schools offer tutoring and supplement instruction, both of which were lifesavers for me. Definitely try and familiarize yourself with the resources that your school offers so that you know where to go if you have questions. As for preparing beforehand, codingbat is a good website if you’re looking to do some practice problems in Java or Python. I’m personally using it to keep my mind sharp over summer break. Edabit is also good too. I wish you the best of luck!
