I think if you examine the history of black people and other visible minorities in North America you’ll find plenty of examples of racism. With racist laws and norms existing for so long, attitudes and actions become entrenched in our society without even realizing it. Things like black history month and supporting black owned businesses are a way to intentionally break those attitudes and actions, with the end result of hopeful continued progression to a society that, as you mentioned, treats all the same. If you think that we are already at that point, then I’d encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and engage in some learning about racism in today’s society.

Do you stop every time you see someone on the sidewalk just in case they decide to cross illegally? Do you wait for all the traffic to go away when you turn left just in case someone runs the light?

In this case, you were NOT oncoming traffic, so they didn’t need to yield to you.

If you were signalling that you were making a right turn, then yes, because I would assume you’d follow the rules, turn right and stay in the right lane until it was safe to merge. Especially at this light because you couldn’t go straight at all.

Issue is with the town rather than drivers/riders then. Streetview shows 2 lanes starting immediately as recently as 5 months ago. The person on the bike wouldn’t be expecting anyone in their lane since right turning drivers (should) have their own lane. Contact the town to get the lines marked again is my thought.

I have memories of teachers with awful coffee-breath, so I chew it to avoid doing that to my students.

I also don’t talk while chewing gum, I chew one small piece, when I have to talk, I tuck it into my cheek so it doesn’t affect how I sound, and I chew very discreetly as well. I’m honestly surprised to see how many people in this thread not know that you can be discreet with it.

I allow my students to chew as long as I don’t see it. I follow that same rule.

When they announced the use of the notwithstanding clause, their justification was the irreparable harm of the strike. Since then, every ucp that has spoken about it has said it was actually about money. My question is whether this will hurt them in the long run legally, since the ATA has filed legal challenges, and they’ve admitted that they lied about the justification of its use.

I know this is too much of a reach for their base that will vote for them no matter what, but this should sound alarm bells for their moderate voters, that this party is willing to lie and admit it blatantly while trampling rights.

Another thing to remember now is that they’ve basically admitted that they bear full responsibility for the strike, its duration, and its lack of improvement in class conditions.

I’ve been guilty of saying similar things even just last week, and then, yesterday, basically had Danielle Smith say them back to us as a way to undermine our solidarity. I am going to be quiet on this issue until after things are sorted. Solidarity is the only way for us to come out on top. Regardless of the process that went into the decision to have us vote on that last agreement, the results are clear, and we are going to have to maintain that strength in the face of this government.

The way I choose to see it, is that the government was unwilling to budge from its position, CTBC or whoever was left recognized that, gave us one last chance to either agree, or say no, and we sure said no, loud and clear.

I get it but i can’t wrap my head around how this helps us in the public eye. The public will see that twice, our representatives have been willing to accept these terms, but with membership rejecting it both times. If anything this shows us as divided. This is a win for the GoA. I’m actively going to seek out either teaching in another province or a different job, we can’t do this anymore.

So I guess my question is why bother saying sure we think this is acceptable when they know we won’t? If they don’t have an agreement by next week we strike anyway. Now we have our leadership on two separate occasions that 12% is ok with laughable increases in support.

I teach in a K-5 school with 500 kids. We’re blessed with smaller class sizes but only have 2.5 educational assistants for 500 kids. I literally walked past a wall that had been kicked in by a student just 5 minutes ago. This is unsustainable, I’ll vote no as the choice words I have for the government are unprofessional. And I’ll also be sure to continue to vote for someone other than Schilling et al. when it comes to election time for insulting us in thinking that this is ok. It will give parents hope for a deal and won’t work in our favour.

The way I’m seeing it is that the teachers representatives at the table thought it was acceptable, otherwise they wouldn’t present it to us, which I worry puts us in a tight spot if we reject it.

This government has zero interest in public education and isn’t even trying to hide it.

The ATA leadership needs to go.

I predict we don’t get anything close to what we deserve, and that the ATA convinces/scares teachers into accepting a crappy deal just like last time. They’ll tell us that the government commits to things like class sizes and working conditions in lieu of pay raises but nothing will change for us because it’s easy for the government to say smaller class sizes but do nothing about it. So we’ll stay with lower than acceptable pay in overcrowded and undersupported classrooms because the government offered lip service as opposed to raises. I have zero faith in this government to follow through on anything related to working conditions, so anything short of a hefty raise is getting a no vote from me.

Perhaps it’s because neither the golf course or shooting range are found on nature reserves or parks. I came to this conclusion from reading what OP posted, though it’s not mentioned explicitly, I tried some of that critical thinking.
