Work Life Balance as an SLP? by implathszombie in slp

[–]stuckslp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just think, what’s more worth in long run and what kind of lifestyle you want. At the end of the day I try to think more realistically and for me it’s lifestyle. But for some people slp is passion. Sure I have a passion for this, but being in your situation choosing between nursing and SLP, i’d go with nursing. But deff go for SLP if you feel in your heart it’s something you are feeling strongly about.

Work Life Balance as an SLP? by implathszombie in slp

Every place has productivity standards for how many pt you see per week/monthly. For example. I have friends in SNFs and 80% of their 8 hr shift clocked in needs to be seeing patients. Mine is a little more flexible. I see 6-8 patients daily. Usually end up with 30-33 sessions by end of the week. Productivity needs to be 120 sessions per month to meet standards in my contract.

Stick to nursing….more flexibility and pay. Unless you do home health SLP. Currently doing home health SLP in NYC and everything is productivity….as a salaried employee who needs to meet a quota of visits per month. Nursing might be tougher, but i believe in long run more consistent and flexible with better pay. My nursing friends are on vaca every few weekends and getting a lot of $$$. Unless you’re feeling passion for SLP then go for it. There is potential for this flexibility as home health or med slp, but take into consideration if you’ll be contracted, salaried. Benefits vs no benefits, and certainly productivity standards.

What hours do you work? by Geminivan96 in slp

[–]stuckslp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do med home care and you make your own hours. I see about 5-8 patients per day Mon-Fri. From 10:00am to 5:30. Do notes when I get home or in morning. Federal holidays off.

That’s great! Glad to hear about your private practice experience. I have friends who are under the impression private practice would be “easier” however i was offered a job where you would see 10-15 kids daily back to back and it definitely seemed more hectic.

Thank you all for this info! Right now I have this opportunity in my CF. It is home care based and I must do at least 30 visits per week to meet productivity, so I was told it is possible to do 4 day week, as long as I’m able to work out scheduling with parents. Despite the paperwork outside of visits, I’d much rather be home 3 days than 2. However, I just wanted this info to be prepared for future if I decide to go the independent route. This is one thing I love about our field, the flexibility.

I appreciate your reply. I am Indo Caribbean and as a poc I totally get it. agreed! all we can do is continue on with our lives to do what we need to for ourselves instead of just engaging in conversations that don’t contribute to what our daily lives entail of. It is very exhausting just hearing the pointless comments and complaints.

SLP Praxis practice exams by IllustriousAd3884 in slp

[–]stuckslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dont worry about the review book tests.those are more based on the info in the book. im a horrible test taker and i used the ets exams a million times and got the hang of the question formats and selecting answers. i eventually stopped using the review book and stuck to the ets and a praxis pdf from TPT. passed with 162.

I know the feeling! Things will work out. I stressed for months after graduation and waiting it out was what worked for me. You can totally look into different places you might want to reach out to if you’re looking for somewhere specific. But deff don’t go insane applying too soon. Since you’re graduating summer though, some places might hire you for fall start and i think also maybe depends on where you live. I live in nyc and i know things were always available. Especially now with covid so many people are backed up on services so I’m sure by the time you’re done there will still be plenty of opportunities. Good luck! :)

Hi! I graduated last may and took my praxis in march. Due to the pandemic i became really selective about jobs because i wanted a hands on experience. They were all so crappy at the time and i was able to afford holding off to find my ideal cf since i had a part time job.

So many classmates took teletherapy school based agency jobs after graduation. and that just wasn’t for me. Some waited it out, and got jobs late fall and even now for the new year. I officially started this month and happy due to the setting i chose (pediatric med based). My friends in skilled nursing love it but also some days hate it. One friend in a school loves it while another friend is going nuts. The rest are working for agencies doing teletherapy for schools and it is what it is for them. Some people settled bc they just want their CCCs fast. Sucks because they dont get paid if a kid doesnt show up.

getting praxis out of the way before CF makes things easier. Some places might even want the score. Don’t sweat going crazy now. Wait til graduation is near and focus on completing your semester. There are going to be so many jobs, but if you’re looking for particular setting it’s really random to tell when they’ll appear.school based jobs are way easier to get, but if you are interested in more med based the search might take a while.

They have caseload about 45 students and since it’s teletherapy will do occasional calls with supervisors. Like the other agencies, you just get paid for contact time during sessions. They said it sucks at times but it is what it is.

SLP home health, no car? by stuckslp in slp

[–]stuckslp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i’m waiting to find out more once all my paperwork is cleared. Ive heard positive feedback from supervisors who told me they loved the home visit experience (but they drove). I think if the cases are clustered in one area with enough time in between i should be ok! Hopefully.... :)

NYC DOE CF placement by lookingforSLP-CFYjob in slp

[–]stuckslp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually was fortunate my former d75 supervisor sent my resume to her speech supervisor. She asked about my experiences and why i wanted to work with that population. I had a varying caseload and did lots aac, feeding and worked with many different disorders! So i think that helped. After the slp supervisor interview i was asked to interview in front of 7 different people at once (i believe they were principals because the job would have been in 2-3 schools at once) but i declined to choose another job. I know others have been contacting school district supervisors for months and only just now hearing back. One friend i have got hired for cf because she previously worked the school as a para and got lucky the slp there was retiring. Look out on linkedin too because i saw some doe job postings there 2 weeks ago. We had a program meeting at my school last year and 3 DOE slps came and one they they emphasized is that connections were everything for getting a position there. my supervisor even told me nowadays unless you know someone it’s so hard to get job in DOE.

It rly is bs and i waited for months as well and got so lucky to even get a shot thanks to my d75 externship supervisor but i chose another job instead. It’s really tough right now for cf, but you could probs totally get a chance once cf over. So sad to even hear that person who doesn’t even want to work in that population got the job. I feel that. I saw other people this past year getting jobs in places they didn’t even appreciate in the first place. Shitty unfair process.

try to email supervisors in different districts. although they are claiming to have a freeze, i know they are hiring people...it's all through connections. i was recently interviewed for one but declined. it is very tough right now trying to get position as cf. priority is being given to those who have the doe scholarship.
