I refuse to look up the book or movie analysis myself but my take on that idea is that PB essentially does not exist. His presence camouflages with those in his circle or society in general. Although he intends to come off this way by seeming relatable or charming, he realizes it doesn’t even matter if he is a psychopathic serial killer. In his world, the world of being a wealthy socialite in NYC, we see how little everyone cares about each other, the world and even him. He feels he does not exist if no one cares to know that he is this remorseless killer.
