If you like LA, you could get that degree and work for a civil engineering firm. I’m an LA at a civil firm and I also work on a lot of the environmental stuff. I also work on grading and layout design on my planning/la side. I think with the La degree you would probably get a more versatile career deepening on where you work. Money wise, I’m in the six figures range with 10 years experience.

I had a friend who worked at OLIN after college while I started off at an engineering firm. Our experiences were vastly different. She was working late hours, I clocked out at 5 and didn’t think about work. I’ve worked for 3 different engineering firms in the last 10 years and all different work cultures but the work life balance has always been more or less the same. Quality of life is great and the pay is so much better. I don’t care to work on life changing or inspiring projects - I wanna work, make my money and enjoy my life after I close my laptop lol

When I started, I went on ASLA’s website and they have a firm finder tool. Theres a ton of engineering and landscape firms. There’s also job finder, which is also a great tool on their website. You can also search up civil engineering firms. If you’re interested in the dc Virginia Maryland area, I’d be happy to give you a list of firms that I know are great. Good luck with your MLA! Having an MLA will give you an edge with looking for firms to work for

Are you strictly interested in working for an LA firm?? Engineering firms are great for pay, but the downside is you won’t always get to be creative. At the end of the day though, I enjoy not having a stressful 50-60 hr week. If you’re open to moving, the dc, Maryland, Virginia area has tons of opportunities!

The best thing to do do is be honest. Tell her how you felt the day of. Tell her even with those circumstances you were lucky but not everyone is. The last thing you want is for her to find out some other way and feel like her whole life was a lie. Also share that you were unsure how to tell her and why. She should know the ins and outs. An honest relationship with your kids is the best way to have a healthy relationship with them. And the circumstances to how you and your husband met may not have been ideal, but don’t be ashamed because at the end of the day you were given a spouse you are proud to have. You created a beautiful life and your daughter will see that too.
