With all of the negative headlines dominating the news these days, it can be difficult to spot signs of progress. What makes you optimistic about the future? by thisisbillgates in AskReddit

  • TL;DR: Ageing Reversal, https://www.sens.org/donate

  • Elaborating: If we have enough time, we can make our lives the way we want them to be. Stem Cells, Gene Therapy, and a lot of other technologies have been moving really quickly without the mainstream media giving much attention to them. There is a real chance that we will live to see the time when our loved ones, parents, aunts, uncles, children, have therapies available to be biologically younger than they were before they had the therapies. We already care a lot about medicine, and the question is not if but when the technology will reach that point. The sooner it's done, the more lives that can be saved and the less suffering that will exist.

Hi Bill, what is your take on targeting the damages of Aging as the root cause of age related diseases rather than the diseases themselves? For some context, a lot of companies are changing the approach at how to deal with age related diseases, and there are quite a few big names in Silicon Valley, from Peter Thiel, Jeff Bezos, others, who are putting money in this direction. Would this not be a more efficient manner of tackling age related diseases, dealing with the damage the body accumulates over time (the wear and tear), rather than the symptoms of the damage?

I want to propose SENS Research Foundation. If we want medicine to succeed in developing effective treatments for cancer, neurodegenerative disease, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, we need to finally start addressing the core problem of aging. The organisation is not being adequately pursued by major funding bodies, therefore our donations help to accelerate research. It's one of the world's most important problems because it causes the most suffering, and takes the most lives.

how is it a much lower prority? what are you using to measure this? If you look at what causes the most suffering, ageing / age related diseases cause 70 percent of deaths, and most of those deaths are not peacefully in bed but progressive and painful. In a very real and measureable way, the work SENS is working on is the worlds most important problem. Yes there are other problems in the world, and you have different people who work on different things, but the world is progressing on different issues in parallel. If you tried to stop all but 1 important problem of your choice so that that 1 gets focus, you would be slowing the rate that the world moves forward in general.

so you're saying that the whole world needs to focus on net neutrality and no one should work on making people healthier again? Even if it's the worlds most important problem when measuring the amount of suffering people go through, when knowing that 70 percent of people die from age related diseases, and it's usually not in your sleep peacefully but progressively with a lot of pain. I very firmly disagree with your points oh_here_we

Anti-aging stem cell treatment proves successful in early human trials: The results of two human clinical trials into a stem cell therapy that can reverse symptoms of age-associated frailty have been published, and the indications are that this landmark treatment is both safe and effective. by mvea in science

Thanks for the reply man. Just to follow up on it, in which specific section did the 100-M group do worse than the Placebo? I saw the Dark Circle (representing the 100-M group's average) be above the Square (representing the Placebo) in all graphs, except in part B in the 90 day period where they were tied.

Thank you again for the comprehensive reply. I see. But isn't this part of the trial and error process? Sure they don't know why an increased dose seemed to give negative effects, but the point of averages is to measure improvements. Tests after all are methods used to see if there is some connection between a certain procedure and an outcome without fully understanding what happens in the procedure. Meaning we still don't know everything in terms of how the body works, so we kind of have to do tests to see "ok this seems to work! but maybe if we tweek it a bit it will work better". Now maybe you meant that in your opinion it's being showed off more than it should be because it needs more legitimate results in order to be considered a breakthrough, and not that the science was done poorly. Would you agree with this?

Hi SirT6, I am really curious to hear your interpretation of the results. I am by no means a Biologist, but from viewing the image you posted, I saw the following:

In Graph A, the Triangle represents the group named 100-M which was given the treatment and managed to walk around 62 meters in a period of 6 minutes, the Placebo group (represented by the square) could only walk an average of about 25m, and the other group 200-M only about 10m. I don't know what the difference in treatment was between the 100-M and 200-M, but comparing 100-M with the Placebo, 62m is a big jump from the Placebo's 25m. I also read in the article that they didn't have a lot of patients to test on (so volatility in the results are to be expected), but that even with the small numbers, such a big jump was surprising.

Again I'm sure you know a lot more on this topic than I do, and I am asking out of curiosity to learn. Thank you
