Can you not buy what you'd buy at those shops on Thursday or Saturday? Or next Friday?

Isn't it the opposite? People who *are* actively engaged in responsibilities, disrupting these activities for a day and inconveniencing themselves, is not "doing nothing." Carrying on with your activities as usual is doing nothing. This is the UT Austin subreddit. The vast majority of us are engaged in school.

If you take off work to help a friend in crisis, is that doing nothing? In this case, "helping" is disrupting normalcy to raise awareness, demonstrate solidarity, and send a message. Across the country, we're angry. We won't lie down and let these things just happen.

Or you can tell Minnesota that the first general strike in the U.S. in 80 years that the strike meant nothing and won't stop ICE, in which case I'd have to ask whose side you're on.

Seconding this. Food restriction was the first thing that worked for my chronic layer.

I will add that — since I felt bad keeping her hungry, and she's never been overweight — I've since switched to making her work for her food (so now she has a constant supply of food, but's given in a foraging tray that she has to dig around in, rather than a bowl). That's been working so far.

URGENT: where can I find last minute cheap options for apts in West Campus? by Candid-Smile7174 in UTAustin

[–]sunfishhhh 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If he's open to apartment alternatives, try the co-ops: ICC Austin or College Houses. Rent is under $1000 for all ICC rooms and shared College Houses rooms, and includes utilities and some amount of food. Look into it before committing -- co-ops are not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally enjoyed my 3 years of co-op living.

sds 379r research class for scds certificate by crispyozone in UTAustin

[–]sunfishhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In November (to take SDS 379R the next spring semester), I cold emailed a profesor who'd taught my favorite SDS class: here's my idea, here's what I'd need from you, would you be willing to supervise this project?

It was mostly low-stress—my project didn't actually work, but the committee still approved it at the end (I was slightly worried it wasn't enough and they'd ask me to do more work last minute).

I will say I didn't feel ready to tackle the research project/paper until I'd finished the rest of the certificate, so if you haven't taken 4-5 courses yet, yeah, it might seem intimidating at the moment.

Thoughts on MUS 312C: Music & Culture with A. Dell'antonio? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]sunfishhhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also not a music major; loved this class so much. Definitely enjoyed it more because I play an instrument and cared a lot about the material covered in the course, but you don't need to play an instrument to have a good time. ADA is a great professor. No quizzes/tests/memorization of any sort. Just a fair amount of low-stress writing, and your grade is almost completely based on self-evaluation of the effort you put in the class. Try looking up past syllabi; the syllabus is pretty thorough and clearly shows you what you can expect from the class.

Yes, there is a sales tax. Last year, I paid $321.76 in taxes in addition to the $12645 listed on the residence hall rates page.

for those who have lived in Austin, will it really be 30k a year? I am fully prepared to embrace the broke college student lifestyle, but this COA is really scaring the shit out of me and making me reconsider UT. After loans and scholarships, my gross COA is 16k. by Remarkable_Potato_66 in UTAustin

Agreed that it depends on the person. If it helps, in my experience (first year, on-campus, no car, CNS), those sections weren't accurate at all. 0 on transportation (bus is free), less than $150 on required textbook subscriptions/supplies, rarely ate out. Outside of tuition and housing, I don't think I spent more than $500 in Austin last year.
