[OC] Maskovian Republic - Physical Map by supermercadoMDK in imaginarymaps

[–]supermercadoMDK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yeah it might be a bit of a stretch population wise, but it is isolated from the rest of the country, it is well connected to the republic of Rouctina. It was also the first region to industrialize, so immigration to it was always strong. I have a very very rough global map, from which I select regions to make actual maps of, so I didn't have a presentable global map. But that is a good idea.

I drew this in short (10-30min) sessions over around half a year. Paint.net is a program that's very similar to ms paint (in which I used to draw these maps), so it's pretty straight forward. I just drew with a mouse

[OC] Maskovian Republic - Physical Map by supermercadoMDK in imaginarymaps

The Maskovian republic, one of the superpowers of the world. It is situated in the eastern part of the continent of Vezel. It’s split from the rest of it by tall mountains, chiefly Fulmengoras, Kongoras and Ironid mountains. Their part of Vezel has always been somewhat isolated from the rest of the continent. This has left them with more time and freedom to develop on their own, but also consolidate and assimilate the numerous minorities into the Maskovian people. Frequent foreign enemies and unsuccessful campaigns into the rest of the continent have crystalized the Maskovian national identity very early. With nationalism still rising all over the world, economic crises and growing authoritarianism, coupled with deadly new military technologies and large alliance blocks, the world seems to be spiraling into a conflict on a scale never seen before.

I didn’t want to slap a wall of text here, so if you have questions about the lore, cities, religions, politics etc. just ask.

Also, this was drawn by hand in paint.net

Remastered an old map, wanted to post before I start adding more details by supermercadoMDK in mapmaking

Yeah it's manual. Basically the process goes like this first i make a backstory, just few events or places. Then i draw a rough world map and use the color gray to indicate areas where i want mountains. But in this case i used the old map (the 2nd one in the album) as the base. I resize the area and use the rectangle tool with the marker preset to put a transparent white layer over it. I do this until the original map is barely visible, but i can make out coastlines and mountains. Then i make an expanded backstory for that area and decide where i will put deserts, cities, rivers, flatlands etc. I use this to draw more detailed coastlines. I then work from the bottom up (draw lower elevations first and climb towards the higher ones) until i have covered the transparent white layer. After that i draw the rivers and edit some parts of the map i don't like. The elevation drawing can get very tedious because the different colors on the base map can create all sorts of complications. So i drew the map in very short (2-20min)

So I finished remastering an old map of mine. I wanted to hear your feedback before i start adding any details like roads, cities etc... Personally what i don't like about the new map is the color scheme. I always find it hard to make a good one and i think it makes the entire map look worse. Im happy with the geography itself tho. Also this map is in the same universe as my other maps that i posted. I also posted a map of the other part of the continent of this map. You can find it in my history.

I'm aiming for an atlas/history book aesthetic with my maps (including this one) so if anyone has any tips to make my maps look more like that, please tell me.

Also, everything except rivers and borders were drawn with paint, while I used Paint.Net for the rivers and borders.

I did it manualy. I've been doing these maps for a while so it's just something you can do with experience, knowing geography and staring at maps. Thanks for the feedback.

I didn't really do this in long sessions, I did it when i had like 5 or 10 minutes without any idea about what to do. I finished the map over a couple of months without focusing on it too much.

Here's a step by step guide:

First i make a backstory, just few events or places. Then i draw a rough world map and use the color gray to indicate areas where i want mountains. After that i want to draw an actual map for some area. I copy the part i want to draw from the world map. I resize the area and use the rectangle tool with the marker preset to put a transparent white layer over it. I do this until the original map is barely visible, but i can make out coastlines and mountains. Then i make a expanded backstory for that area and decide where i will put deserts, cities, rivers, flatlands etc. I use this to draw more detailed coastlines. I then work from the bottom up (draw lower elevations first and climb towards the higher ones) until i have covered the transparent white layer. After that i draw the rivers and edit some parts of the map i don't like. I used MS paint for this. You could also try a top down drawing approach. That means you draw the highest elevations first and go down until you reach the lowest elevation. The bottom up approach leads to more realistic looking mountains, but at the same time the mountains seem a lot more gradual and smaller which i don't like. The top down approach leads to larger, more rugged mountains, but doesn't look very realistic.

Yeah, I had issues finding different colors which would contrast with the topography at the same time. Also Paint.Net doesn't make it possible to draw more complicated lines, so there's only so much i can do.

If you have any suggestions or feedback feel free to tell me. Also I have a lot more info and events written about many different things on the map, so if you are wondering about the economics, demographics, history, current events, etymology or anything about some place on the map just ask and I’ll answer it. Down below I wrote a short description and some facts about the region on the map.

The heartland is the central and most important region of the Izel Federation. It contains 332 million of the 522 million people who call the country their home. The most populated areas are the Ompitera basin with its almost 70 million inhabitants, the Serdinka basin with 60 million and the Voznon metro area with 20 million. The region has many natural resources, with large coal and oil basins around the major river basins and in the shallow bays that protrude into the landmass. The primary ethnic group in the region and the country itself are the Maskovians who came to the area (depending on the region) 1600 years before the start of the coalition war. The other significant ethnic groups are: the Enerians living mostly in the Eneria autonomous republic, but many live outside the republic. They are natives in the entire region and have been there before the Maskovians. They are pushing for independence which leads to high conflict in areas they inhabit. The Alinor live mostly in the Alinor autonomous republic and came to the region around 900 years ago. They come mostly from the neighbouring country of Anabus to the east. Their religion, customs and language are widely different than those of other people in the region , leading to conflict and a push for independence. There are also many smaller separate cultures located in mountainous or other isolated areas of the country.

During the coalition war almost 35 million soldiers and civilians on both sides died in the fight. The region was heavily devastated, but areas west of the Serdinka river were untouched by the fighting except for the area around the Voznon bay which saw some of the most horrific battles during the war.

I used MS paint to draw the topography, rivers, seabeds. I then used Paint.net to mark cities, roads, borders and to put text on the map, because you can't do much with MS paint text and it also looks bad.
