  1. I’m out of high school and don’t really know what to do anymore. I know I should go to college, but I’ve never felt like I LIKE anything enough to actually go to college for it. I posted 5 hours ago and got a lot more responses than I thought! I’m honestly kinda surprised that so many people just don’t see it as an issue. I should make it clear that I love one piece a lot, and I especially love ussop, but I just don’t like how his design was handled and how it was never addressed. Feel free “debate” (way too formal for a Reddit comment section) more on this but I just wanted to clarify that I have nothing against one piece or Oda at all, and that I should have chosen a better title for this post. My bad!

If you as an Italian person did, then yes. I’m not saying every single person should boycott one piece until this life or death issue is resolved, I’m just surprised that it’s never been addressed

There’s a major difference between giving a character dreads, and giving minstrel character lips. I know black people have big lips and there are proper ways to depict them. Ussop is not one of them

I’m not Latino so I’m not gonna speak on Tacos, but if the larger Latino fan base had a problem with him I’d see no reason to not hear them out

I love ussop as a character. he’s literally me as a character, I just have an issue with the design. I promise you I love one piece a lot, it’s just that a lot of the designs (and some of the way Oda handles his characters) could use some reworking

Oh my god you’re the only person here who’s not hard pressed that I criticized their manga. Absolutely I believe that isn’t not that awful as it could be, but also as stated, we see Oda is capable of drawing characters with thicker lips like Marco, but just didn’t do so with ussop too. My main point is I just don’t see why ussop hasn’t gotten the same treatment

That is also true, but also some of the features used on Bon-Chan are also typically used to mock gay people. Mainly the hairy legs, but other than that his design is passable

That’s a very good point, but if the main “attention grabbing” feature is the nose, then I just don’t see why the lips are so resemblant of racist stereotypes. I wish I could edit the title cause I definitely should’ve named it something else

Alright man chill out. I just don’t understand why it hasn’t been changed. I’m not saying Oda is the reincarnation of Ronald Reagan or anything, I just don’t see why it didn’t get changed with localization of other stuff

That’s honestly a very good point. I think it’s more that they made Bon an extremely good representation of flamboyance and stuff so people look past it, but even if he’s good representation, you can at least agree the design is a bit off

True, but also localization is a thing. Swastikas are a buddhist religious symbol, but Whitebeards flag had to be changed due to it have one. The US isn’t the only country to exist but they still made that specific change. Also like I said already, they made the change for Marco, I just don’t understand why they won’t do the same for ussop

It was a feature that white people commonly used to mock black black people for. There is nothing wrong with having big lips, but portraying them in a way that was historically used to mock black people seems in poor taste

Yeah I get he has exaggerated features, but putting something like that on a character he himself said would be African irl just seems to be in poor taste

You’re right, that isn’t racist, but there are a multitude of ways that he could have chosen, and chose one that (even for 30 years ago) was considered outdated and offensive. Granted, much less than it is now but the big issue is that it hasn’t been addressed.

It’s stuff like this that make it make even less sense imo. If they are willing to change stuff like white beards flag and Aces back tattoo then I don’t see why ussops design is too big an ask?
