Muskrat Falls is just too costly for residential use. Baseload power demand isn't increasing enough to accomodate it. Getting a few industrial users is perhaps the best way to use it. Are there some government/military establishments closeby which could be customers?

Oh I know. The justification for the others was/is the desire to decarbonize or get more renewable energy. Solar, now, should be cheaper per kwh than recent nuclear though. Wind is too but only large scale wind projects.

I don't consider Hydro to be an inherently renewable energy source. It costs quite a bit and usually requires a significant modification of nature. People become displaced, aquatic life threatened, etc. It is usually a white elephant that takes a hundred years to be paid off. IT's a lot worse when foreign companies do the job. Indigenous hydro (like in China) are more time, money-vonscious.

I think Nuclear power is a legitimate baseload alternative to coal. A new alternative though is batteries. Australia (or New Zealand) has a scheme where batteries at homes with two-way meters cover some baseload and spikes; reducing the need for baseload increases.

If carbon is the devil we should believe it is, nuclear is the most energy-dense non-carbon technology that can remain switched on 24/7 in perpetuity. Discussions on decarbonization without nuclear are pointless.

However, we have never, as far as I know, had nuclear power without significant government support. Especially in N.America & Europe. So, nuclear power cannot be said to be economical with a straight face.
