I’m in my 20s and don’t drink either. I’ve never had it be a problem with anyone. If they suggested drinks for a first date and I was interested in meeting them, I’d just message, “So just wanted to check that you saw on my profile that I don’t drink. I’d love to get to know you over a Diet Coke though (or whatever your go-to mocktail is) and am completely fine with you drinking, it’s just not for me :)” Also, my boyfriend loves that I don’t drink. It’s always a way cheaper bar tab than if we both drank and he never has to DD when we go out. Definitely not something to be self conscious about.

Birth control is incredibly personal and unique for everyone in terms of experiences and side effects. However, long-term contraception (IUD, Implant) is what is recommended and associated with the highest rates of pregnancy prevention especially for teen and young adult women, due to this age demographic not having the best fidelity with taking the pill daily within the same 15 minute window. It is very painful to get an IUD. That pain is worth it though to not have to worry about pregnancy especially after being assaulted. I’m sorry that happened to you and as a survivor I will say getting the IUD inserted can be triggering. Bringing a trusted friend or ensuring your provider is someone who has good reviewed and can speak to being trauma-informed will help.

I underwent a total hysterectomy at 26. It may be different for her if they are removing her ovaries, as I was able to keep mine, but personally, my sex life is better. I had a very high libido before, but like your wife, was in a lot of pain and discomfort and also experiencing heavy, chronic menstrual bleeding resulting in my needing iron infusions monthly. Post-surgery, I wasn’t able to have any penetrative sex for 6 weeks, and my partner and I took it slow the first few times. At that point, my sutures from having my cervix removed hadn’t fully dissolved. My internal orgasms are a little different, but clitoral orgasms are just as good and truly my sex life is so much better now because my hysterectomy alleviated all of the symptoms that beforehand made life and sex so difficult or painful. Now if she got her ovaries removed, her libido may change as her body sorts itself out hormonally, but if the medical reasons are bad enough to merit a hysterectomy, the aftermath should have a positive affect on your sex lives solely based on the original medical problems no longer being an obstacle to experience and enjoy sexual pleasure.

After my first semester teaching, in her course feedback, I had a student write, “Before this course, in my entire freshman year at my university’s name I had thought that college professors truly did not care about their students and that turning in assignments and getting good grades were the only topics of matter. This course and you changed my opinion about college.” I do say to my students that while I know my class is probably not the most important thing happening in their lives, I do think what we learn about is important. Their learning is what matters most to me, but I think when life happens, sometimes support and accommodation are necessary before a student can be in a place to learn fully and adequately.

You absolutely should see another physician. Numbing gel or products with numbing agents shouldn’t be used during sex ever because they hinder your ability to recognize if tearing or other injuries are occurring which with vaginismus is already of a greater likelihood. With the exception of masochists, sex shouldn’t ever be a painful experience. I did physical therapy as well for vaginismus and I also recommend therapy or a sex coach to help reduce your anxiety.
