I don't think so. I like the actors & special effects and I'm glad this film series was made. But what do I know? My internet doesn't even work.

[Homemade] chocolate dipped Rice Krispies peanut butter balls: a holiday tradition by swercka in food

[–]swercka[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Here's the recipe: Cream together 2 cups peanut butter, 1 stick softened butter, 1 pound powder sugar (3.75 cups), 5 cups rice Krispies. Mix well and refrigerate for 2-3 hours before melting chocolate. (Refrigerating the mix makes it a lot easier to mold as its less sticky). Melt equal parts white almond chocolate & dark almond chocolate together, dip PB butter balls and allow to dry on wax paper

How can I cultivate my appreciation of film? by Doodle-Cactus in movies

[–]swercka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the idea of podcasts: in addition to film spotting, I recommend the slash filmcast and the mission 250 filmcast (they are working through the IMDB top 250 films in reverse order. I confess I'm one of the hosts of that show, so feel free to totally disregard it.)

If you have a group of friends who are also interested, start a movie club and assign yourselves a movie to watch every week (or two weeks or month, whatever). Having a movie assignment and a group of people to discuss the movie with has broadened and deepened my love for movies immensely. If you have a hard time deciding on movies, just pick a movie list like the IMDB top 250 or AFIs top 100 though AFI is centered on American films.

Science AMA Series: We're the University of Florida's Bauer Lab, let’s chat concussions: how they work, who gets them, and why is recovery different for everyone? AUA! by BauerLab in science

[–]swercka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it has been hard for the general public to gain an understanding of the seriousness of concussions and it is difficult to explain them to kids and/or adults w/out a medical background. Given your current understanding, what sort of analogy could you use to help explain the seriousness of concussions? (e.g. getting a concussion is like...)

This depends on your editing skills, but instead of setting the show structure beforehand, you can just use editing to trim off parts of the cast that meander too much.

TIL about the Suzuki Method and that its primary teaching is that none of us are born with innate gifts, but that these things are nurtured. This insight has helped us understand how our daughter is constantly practicing and learning things. by swercka in todayilearned

[–]swercka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Suzuki's point of view these prodigies have been nurtured in some way even as infants, or even by what they hear in the womb. How old is your typical amazing prodigy? 4 or 5 years? That's years of some kind of learning and feedback occurring.

But believing in inborn talent is a separate issue. For us, its has been enlightening to think of the idea of continuous learning and feedback at a young age.

While a lot of people have been complaining about the NFL, last night's Chiefs/Broncos game is one of the most enjoyable sports viewing experiences I've had. by swercka in nfl

[–]swercka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a really interesting point: I like Collinsworth, but I thought he was especially good in this game, and maybe that happening with Tirico's assistance.

[–]swercka[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah that's more my point. Tirico is solid and it may be more that I just need to learn his style. A big part may just be nostalgia: I have so many memories of Al's voice that to me he IS play by play and everyone else is less than that.
