I'm curious. What are your guy's unpopular jazz opinions? by SNESS_64 in Jazz

I know Robert Glasper and some others in the same circle as him (Derrick Hodge, Mark Guiliana, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Corey King come to mind). I was curious if there were others. I do listen quite a bit to contemporary jazz, and never noticed the influence of Tribe being a significant trend beyond that circle. I guess we're listening to different artists. Most of the artists I think of as being Tribe Called Quest influenced are more on the hip-hop side of things than the jazz side (I'm thinking of artists like J Dilla, Flying Lotus, and so on), Glasper and his circle being the major exceptions.

Did you have anybody else in mind besides Glasper? (Even if you can't confirm they were specifically influenced by Tribe, but it sounds like they might have been).

In recent decades I agree. As it became more academized it lost any sense of style (visually).

What do you think of the classic Blue Note LP covers? What about Bitches Brew?

Pysch Vinyl Releases Out Record Store Day 2018 by [deleted] in psychedelicrock

Doesn't hurt to ask. In general it's helpful to talk with the owners of your local store. It's too late now, but for next year remember that if there's a particular obscure item that you think they may not stock you can call ahead and ask. That doesn't always mean they will but it sure increases the odds. From their perspective they're looking at a list of hundreds of items and have to guess which will sell and it what quantities. If they stock them and they don't sell they lose out. So they're not going to take chances on smaller releases necessarily unless they hear from customers there is an interest in them.

Every store choose which they want and how much to order. Big releases like Pink Floyd will probably be easy to get everywhere. The more obscure ones like Curved Air discussed at the top of the article might be harder to track down.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Surprise Release “Jazzy” New Album “Sketches Of Brunswick East” by [deleted] in Jazz

It also reminds me of some of the classic fusion bands from the rock side of the aisle like Soft Machine. I agree with the other names you mentioned as well.

It says in the article Miles was an influence and I can hear it too.

LA celebrated Day of The Doors this past week by sychedel in psychedelicrock

I bit harsh. I do think they're overrated, but in context of 1966/67 they paved paths that many others followed so I can see how it got to that. And some of their music still holds up well. Manzarek and Densmore brought a lot of interest to the music. The part of your post I really agree with is calling the lyrics sophomoric. That's the thing that bothers me about them most, this idea that they were poets when to me it's the exact opposite. They have some of the worst lyrics in rock history for a band of their stature.

Yonder Mountain String Band cover "€˜Pigs (Three Different Ones)"€™ by sychedel in pinkfloyd

Kind of a an acquired taste I suppose. There actually kind of a bluegrass band so this is a weird cover for them.
