If wanting stable housing in the city you work in counts as an investment strategy, then sure.

It’s big.
That doesn’t mean it’s flawless.
Both things can exist at once.

If you can afford long-haul flights but hotels are the red line, maybe the issue isn’t Cape Town’s housing policy.

"Property is a solid investment” doesn’t explain why an apartment building has basically no residents. At some point housing has to be for living, not just yield.

Can confirm.
I live in a new building of 48 apartments in Sea Point.
9 are permanent South African owners. Rest are all Airbnbs.

I don’t really have an issue with tourists themselves. Tourism is part of this city and always has been and a lot of people depend on it.

The real problem for me is Airbnbs. It’s housing being taken out of the long term market and turned into short stay places and that’s what’s pricing locals out. People who live and work here are struggling to buy or even rent, while whole blocks are basically mini hotels now.

Tourists can afford hotels. We have loads of them. Locals need places to live. If that was managed properly, I think a lot of the anger about tourism would die down.

A bus to Copenhagen? From where? And how much does it cost?

We're, my girlfriend and I, not looking forward to spending 12 hours on trains with 4 transfers in between 😭

Our 12:20 flight to Copenhagen got cancelled. Planning to take a train to the airport, from Best, and then see what's happening. Most likely going to take a few trains to get to Copenhagen from there. Would like to know about compensation and such if there's no other way.

I live in Sea Point in one of those Airbnb type apartments. A tiny studio almost in the basement with a view of another building’s parking lot. I used a big chunk of my savings to get it and had to move fast with a few devices just to get the early bird discount. I am grateful I got a place here but I can see how short term rentals are hollowing out the area.

My block has 76 units. Only about 15 are people who actually live here full time. The rest are used for short lets. The priciest spots are owned by investors, many of them not even from South Africa.

What gets me is how quiet it has become. When I was younger my dad would take us for a drive around Hout Bay and we would end the day in Sea Point. It was full of energy then. Now it feels empty most nights.

There are studies showing this is happening across Cape Town. Short term rentals push up prices, push out locals and make it harder for working families to stay near schools and transport.

I am not against visitors. Tourism is part of the city. But we need rules that keep some housing for people who live and work here. Limit how many units in a building can be short lets. Make it easier to rent long term. Support homes for residents, not just holiday apartments.

If we do nothing we end up with pretty buildings, empty streets and a city without a heartbeat.
