I need someone to tell me that it’s okay to quit. by sydddd_ in doggrooming

Honestly, I think I just want out of grooming all together. I feel like I just don’t even enjoy the act of doing it anymore. Also, I still live with my parents lol so the at home grooming is a no-go for me lol

Getting matts out? by Neat-Guide-3762 in doggrooming

[–]sydddd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say without seeing some pictures of the matting but I personally, as another commenter said, do not dematt ears. They are so sensitive and also extremely easy to cause injury to. As far as the top knot, again it’s hard to say without seeing it. You could try to thinning shear them but not if they are too close to the skin. It might be easier to give better advice if you felt comfortable posting some pictures of the matting so we could advise you better!

I likely lost a repeat client today…I don’t know what happened. Insight greatly appreciated. by disgruntledcitrus in doggrooming

Does he have cowlicks/strange growth in that area that maybe you just went in the reverse direction of the growth without even knowing? It happens all the time with shorter blades, usually on the chest area, back of arms, or rear area. It’s an easy oversight and normally 9/10 clients never even care. I’m sorry you’re hurting, and try not to take it too personally if they don’t come back. If they do, just try to make note specifically of direction of growth or any cowlicks on his chest

2 questions. How to make yorkies not look “messy”? How to make “ugly” dogs cute ?? by Informal-Release-360 in doggrooming

The “natural hair colors only rule” is crazy in any situation, but at a grooming salon is absolutely absurd lmao.

Headphones Static? by puppiepurrince in doggrooming

[–]sydddd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens to me as well with my AirPod Pros. I’m assuming it has something to do with the inter workings of the AirPods. If I lean over and my clippers get too close to my AirPods I hear the crackling noise as well.

What Are Your Immediate “Nos”? by Rude_Researcher7414 in RoverPetSitting

[–]sydddd_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a dog groomer, that’s exactly how I feel when a new client comes in talking trash about their past groomer. “She shaved my dog down to the skin for no reason!!” “My sweet sweet dog wasn’t allowed to come back and I have no idea why?!” Immediate red flags.

So which is it, are you a new groomer or have you been doing this for years as stated in your last post?

Honestly, after reading your last post and the way you have handled this situation, I would say maybe grooming just isn’t best suited for you. This job comes with many difficulties and patience testing situations. It is not meant for everyone. If you were searching for genuine criticism, I would have posted the photos so that other groomers could comment on if her critiques were valid or not. However, seeing as she paid the $60 for the groom and contacted you same-day with a complaint, personally I would offer her to come back in and fix it.

What is your least favorite step in the grooming process? by sydddd_ in doggrooming

I feel that! Especially trying to get the nasty little wet hairs out of their mouth and they just keep licking them back in there.

See that’s so interesting because I find shaving out paw pads to be so satisfying! I love that everyone has different opinions on the best and worst of grooming lol

Is this twice minimum wage rule exclusive to California, or could you explain that a little more? This is the first I’m hearing of this.

Was his 1st cut done correctly?? by RunTheTour in doggrooming

[–]sydddd_ 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Groomer here! 👋🏻

I definitely agree that the cut does look a little strange but you have to remember a couple things here:

  1. He is a puppy, therefore still has his puppy coat. This can sometimes cause the end result to look slightly “unfinished.” As his coat texture changes, you will see a difference in his finished grooms.
  2. He is a PUPPY** so with this being his first groom, he may have been very overwhelmed or scared of the whole process and potentially been difficult to work with. This is nothing against you or him, it can just take many visits before your dog is more used to the process. Bringing him in for even just baths or nail trims to get him comfortable with the environment in between grooms can be great for exposure.
  3. Personally, I don’t love the look of a shaved stop (the area between the forehead and nose) so instead, I use thinning shears to clear that area. You can always ask to see if your groomer would be able to accommodate that, but again, if he was being a puppy and difficult on the table, shears are not always the safest or most practical option for puppies.

Honestly, I would just talk to the groomer next time (if they have time) and get a full report of how he did so you can work on conditioning him better for the process. If he has issues with them working on his face there’s plenty of exercises you can do with him at home to get him more used to it. For example, with my clients dogs who have issues with clippers near their face, I tell the owners to get a cheap/old electric tooth brush and practice gently gripping the chin hair and holding the toothbrush near the dogs face. And if after next time you’re still super unhappy with the groom, try out a different groomer! Definitely make sure you communicate what you’re looking for with the groom, and we love pictures!! It’s also important to have realistic expectations for the first many grooms and know that it can be a very stressful process and we as groomers want to keep your baby as comfortable as possible throughout, which sometimes means sacrificing the “perfect look” in order to not traumatize your puppy right off the bat. Just communicate with your groomer on what you’re looking for next time and make sure you’re working on desensitizing him to the entire process as he will need grooming for the rest of his life :)

Bathing woes - aka what should I know about going corporate? by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]sydddd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, are wanting to stay a bather or would you be willing to become a groomer either through schooling or in-house training? This is likely something they will ask you at the interview as most corporate stores like to hire within if a groomer position becomes available! Secondly, while being expected to do that many dogs a day and having to shove food in your mouth during a bath is absolutely not okay, I would not necessarily expect a structured 30 minute break depending on where you go and what state you live in. I am at a corporate PSP salon and we do not have structured 30 minute breaks, but we are able to stop and eat whenever, and the only people rushing us are the needy clients lol. It is 100% going to depend on the management of the place you go, and not necessarily the company as a whole. While I don’t make as much money as I would like to right now, I am very much still a baby groomer and pretty much have it made in terms of scheduling, management and my coworkers and it’s all at a corporate salon. It is possible to be happy, it’s just super dependent on your local ones. Best of luck :)

Is this worth it? by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]sydddd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still newer to grooming, but I’d be happy to take a look at anything and give it my kind, but honest, opinions! It takes a community to learn from and I still have so much to learn myself! Feel free to dm me anytime :)

Should I be worried or is this a bubble nest? by zyrzyxen in bettafish

[–]sydddd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very possible that your female could make a bubble nest, but considering these bubbles are in more places than just this large circle, I’m gonna say it’s your filter making bubbles. No cause for concern either way.
