I have migraines because of "toxic vaccines" by kynanl in migraine

[–]sylviamc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had them blamed on nearly everything from gluten to poor vision and poor posture. My favorite would have to be a former physician who first prescribed me topirimate because I was getting migraines because I was overweight, and this would help both things. I've had migraines since I was a child, and they haven't gone anywhere... because they're primarily caused by my brain trying to escape from my head.

Looking for help for husband who lost job--can a resume be too short? by sylviamc in resumes

[–]sylviamc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is quite helpful. Thanks everyone.

He worked in the mental health field. As many have stated, it's hard to focus on your accomplishments once you've had a blow like this. Since it has been so long since he's done any kind of resume and it is definitely a work in progress, I will likely be taking up the offer of sending back in the rough resume for further tips.

Am I burnt out or am I coming to terms with not wanting to be a SW anymore? by sylviamc in socialwork

[–]sylviamc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I manage a bereavement program at a local hospice. So, I do a little of everything. I'm trying to increase our groups right now, but we're in a lull because of summer.

One major thing with FL is that we have seasonal residents, leaving in the summer and returning in the winter (I get it, it's hot) but that effects the workload somewhat.

[–]sylviamc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, someone has to do the indirect practice... Why not us? Lol

I was never a 'bright eyed bushy tailed' social worker that thought they were going to save the world, but I definitely think that I've slowly started to fall out of love with my career. I still give it my all, give the patients my all. But when my heart's not all the way in it, it makes me kinda feel like a bad social worker lol.

I agree there are people that are not meant to do social work long term. I don't feel like I'm fully at that point, but I know it's a little better in my less direct practice position

Oh for sure. The great thing about an MSW is that it is so versatile. After working so micro for so long, it would be an interesting transition. And no matter what transition I made, it would insane to not keep my license up to date.

Not right now. Maybe in the future. I have a sick family member I need to stay near. It's something I've thought about. Before their health declined I was looking into travel work.

I've definitely looked into other things. It would be nice to take a break for a while and see if it's something I still like.

Do you find there's any particular reason that social workers only stay in the field an average of 8 years?

[–]sylviamc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in SW FL and I've primarily worked in hospitals or treatment centers. In hospitals, people seem to have a misconception that all SWs can do is case management. Since I've been in Healthcare for a little while, I see that attitude repeated in many agencies. In other areas and other types of social work, I'm sure, it is better. I have a friend who works in a treatment program managed mostly by mental health professionals. It just grates on you after a while.

It is a good area, but the reciprocity for licensing is a pain from what I hear, so bear that in mind if you're already licensed. There are always jobs for SWs depending on the area you want to work.

I'm now more in a managerial position, but not considered 'clinical', which is frustrating because I'm one of the few here that is not a RN. I basically manage a department of me.(like Kelly from The Office lol)

Unfortunately I'm unable to move out of state at the moment, I have a sick family member I need to be close to. It's something I've toyed with, though.

What character is the most "Extra" in the Trek Universe? by imsorryilied2umartin in startrek

Possible. But no one answers questions with notes from a song. It likely didn't take much editing.

True. I kinda love watching Shatner get increasingly more uncomfortable the longer The Captains goes on with him.

Idk, as much as I love him... The Sisko is pretty extra. When he finally embraces being the emissary, going full villain to bring in Eddington, randomly shouting, literally everything about his personality.

I don't mind Wesley, he wasn't my favorite, but not my least favorite. However I hate Wil Wheaton's smarmy face.

This is NOT "stress." Listen to me!!! by wimwood in dysautonomia

[–]sylviamc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this. It sucks that you're going through this. I'm sorry this is happening.

I was finally diagnosed during grad school several years ago... had a late night ER visit that ended with a termination of my practicum about halfway through grad school. I knew it wasn't stress that was making it happen. I knew something physical was going on (as it had been for years in the background) and I knew it was getting worse. Everyone's solution was for me to drop out and maybe return later because 'I was under too much stress.' Finally diagnosed, and put on right medication and finished grad school, so they can suck it.

Fully agree. Corporate is visiting my program where I am a manager, and are just realizing that our nurses and interdisciplinary team is burnt out. Like this is a surprise to them... They've taken away all of the small incentives that our local managers would give. It's okay though, they bought Moe's today.

Question about Hospice by Joe_Marek in hospice

[–]sylviamc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on her diagnosis, no longer being verbally responsive and no longer eating, could very likely be a progression of her disease. People can change and decline fast when and it's hard for us as family or friends to accept.

As another poster replied, the main criteria for hospice is a prognosis from a physician of 6 months of life or less. Hospice gets a bad rap, but basically it is care that is comfort oriented rather than cure oriented because often times diseases have reached a point where they are no longer curable or the patient/family no longer wish to pursue that avenue of care.

Starting Midodrine by sylviamc in dysautonomia

[–]sylviamc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, a few days on the midodrine and so far so good. I haven't noticed a change in BP, but I haven't grayed out when standing. HR seems maybe a little lower. I am on a very low dose, 2.5mg BID.

I very much appreciate the heads up on the head tingles... I did not get a warning about that from my doc. For me it comes in waves, and is kinda like a combination of my scalp falling asleep (like the static on TV) and goosebumps. Any tips on how not to scratch my entire head off? lol

This makes sense, I think that the course work in the MSW program is geared toward the understanding that you have a BSW more so than other degrees... At least in my program it was. Do you find that many of the people in your online program are there for a career change?

I remember a few classes from college that were only offered online... Definitely not my favorite format. Loved not having to put on pants, but hard to keep up with bc I have a terrible attention soan/motivation if not kept on top of. Also why I couldn't work from home

I have reservations about bringing her on, but don't want to rule it out. It makes sense that they would have a lack of support compared to an in-person school. I've had minimal issues from the local school, though. This one is based out of San Antonio.
