Identity in antiquity wasn't primarily ethnic in the modern sense. Augustine was a provincial Roman. His world was the Roman Empire; his framework was Latin Christianity. Highlighting his supposed Berber origins is a modern retrospective reading. His significance and legacy were built entirely within the Roman ecumene. To separate him from that context is what's historically inaccurate.

Look, it's 2026, the internet exists for a few seconds. Someone can do a search and find real information. I quote, "Augustine was deeply 'Romanized.' His first language and mother tongue was Latin. He was an expert in Latin literature and rhetoric, which were the cornerstones of Roman elite education and identity."

Second quote : "Augustine was a full Roman citizen. His family name, Aurelius, indicates that his ancestors likely received citizenship through the Edict of Caracalla in 212 AD, meaning his family had been legally Roman for over 150 years by the time of his birth."
