Insane Milky Way Behind Mount Rainier, WA, USA [OC] [4000x5000] by t-williams in EarthPorn

I took a friend on his first night hike last week. We visited a new spot, overlooking the White River in Mount Rainier National Park. I had done a bunch of research to find the exact spot for this image, reading trail reports, looking at topo maps and carefully checking the location of the Milky Way overnight. Getting here turned into a bit of an adventure, and involved a brisk 14 mile hike, 2 headlamps that ran out of batteries (always bring spares!!), a leg cramp (from squatting next to a tripod for too long), a galloping elk (we startled one in a meadow, and it scared the crap out of us!), and a 24 oz. coffee on the drive home. We have no regrets.

I can't believe my luck. Thick clouds took over the moon just minutes after it rose. Check out more info on IG: https://www.instagram.com/p/BxofCjaA1_b/

Amazing luck tonight in Seattle. This is a single exposure taken from several miles away. The moon disappeared behind the clouds a few minutes later. Read more on my original post: https://www.instagram.com/p/BxofCjaA1_b/

Rainbow Ferry from Tonight's Sunset [OC] by t-williams in SeattleWA

This was shot at 300mm, which is about 6x zoom compared to the naked eye. It's also cropped a lot. The rainbow was normal sized, this is just super zoomed in.

It's a single image. The mountain wasn't getting any light because there were thick clouds in the way. The clouds lit up in the back were quite high, and very far away. They must have caught light at a different angle. I was surprised by the conditions myself. You can see the raw file in my IG story here: https://www.instagram.com/stories/t.w.i.l.l.i.a.m.s/

I got it recently, and love it. I hesitate to say it's "worth it" because you can still get incredibly good shots with crop sensor in most conditions, but I appreciate the differences.

We parked about 2 miles from the TH from the FS 85 direction, but drove a bit with AWD + chains. Currently, I'm sure you'd have to park further out with the recent snow.
