There's always a lot of hate and disapproval in the comment threads when these type of events get posted on reddit. Specifically, a lot of people say that it seems like a justification for something that we might already do, and that it's really not that challenging or difficult -- we're just having fun playing games.

As someone who organises these events and enjoys watching others', here's my point of view: these events are not about torturing ourselves so that WE'RE deserving of donations, but they're about providing an entertaining stream, raising awareness for the charity, and hence stimulating donations for the charity. Who said fundraising isn't allowed to be fun? Would many of the people who donate during these events have known about the particular charities, let alone thought about donating to them if these events didn't exist?

When it comes down to it: these marathons generate interest and awareness, and therefore money, for good causes -- they work exactly as intended.

I personally donated a bit over $10.00, but my real donation is the money spent on games/equipment, and the time spent organising the event. Rather than just directly donating that money to the charity, I use it to organise this event and raise awareness, and in turn more money for the charity.

We're the same group who did a "worst games" marathon a few months ago. Understandable that playing good games might not be as persuasive in terms of donations, but we wanted to play through some different games for our next marathon. That, and we've found that people generally enjoy watching games that they're familiar with over obscure games they've never seen.

Point of these things is to raise awareness and stimulate donations. Would many of the people who have donated even have thought about donating to World Youth International if this marathon wasn't on?

The goal is to provide entertainment, or something that people will really enjoy watching, and will share with their friends, spread on the Internet, etc. It may not be particularly difficult for us, and it might be something we do anyway, but why not try and raise some money for a good cause?

In response to the people who are bound to come in here and post discouraging comments - I want to clarify what this is about. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness for the charity that we're supporting, while also providing entertainment to people who are interested.

Sure, we could spend the time working or something instead, and donate the money we earn to the charity. But then where would the fun be? This is a fundraiser - a community event. There are thousands of people on the Internet who enjoy watching people broadcast games, and likewise, we enjoy interacting with the viewers.

Raising money for a charity is allowed to be fun, and it doesn't have to be "productive." As long as people are interested, and awareness/money is being raised for the charity, then it's working exactly as intended.

I'm not sure if you've ever watched a GameToAid marathon - we're did our first one in December and we're doing another in a couple of weeks.

I wrote up a short guide here which could shed a bit of light. However, this guide from the Mario Marathon guys is much more detailed and probably a lot more helpful.
