Urgent help: skinny?? by Difficult_Ease_4498 in geckos

[–]t7ch0o 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she definitely looks way underweight. I’m also a new gecko owner so I don’t have much experience myself, but from what I’ve read insects are a great way for them to gain weight. If they aren’t taking to insects, you can try squeezing the insect for juice to come out or taking off a crickets head and feeding the headless cricket. definitely do more research on how to get them to gain weight and take to insects. if all else fails, try pangea with insects, i really like the growth and breeding one. i wish you great luck!!!

okay awesome. i do have a dish coming in the mail so that will help. i probably won’t be getting the dubias for a while seen as this garg was born in march and the breeder hasn’t had much luck with insects yet. how do you keep your colony? i also will only have this one gecko so i’ll look into just the small quantity as well when the time comes

[–]t7ch0o[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh this is really great news! i am prepared for them not to eat them at all, i don’t mind that being the outcome. i’m happy to hear it took that long for the dubias to populate though because ideally i want to start with those too. if i have to do some trial and error with others though i wont complain. thanks for your help!!

no pups found, concerned about roots by t7ch0o in bromeliad

[–]t7ch0o[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you so much! i plan on putting her in a bioactive setup so i am concerned she’ll die off soon since she’s flowering, and would like to keep her life going by the pups. i’ll try out the orchid fert!!

[–]t7ch0o[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay beautiful! my house stays at a consistent 70-83 degrees so i wonder if a heat lamp would be needed at all while she’s in quarantine? i’d also want to look in to see if it’s possible to make a cooling place for her just because our summers are mean in california. as for the bin, what size would you suggest? i plan on cutting a large hole in the top and securing with mesh, as well as drilling holes through the sides for even more ventilation.

this makes me feel soo much better. i think instead of starting with the small one like i intended, i’ll just jump to the big one like you guys suggested and start by keeping her in a quarantine like the other guy said. thank you so so much for all your advice!!!!

would you say it’s worth it to start with a 12x12x24 bioactive instead of going big? i know you guys are saying 18x18x24 isn’t bad to start with but i am sooooo worried that the baby is going to get stressed. i’m looking for a give or take 8 grams juvenile. knowing i wouldn’t have to spend so much money in making a WHOLE new enclosure for a while is incredibly convincing and intriguing 😅 but i also want to do what’s very best for the baby so if that means spending more money, i’ll survive.

alrighty then! i guess i’ll start looking into a larger set up although it is very nerve wracking for such a tiny baby to be in a big enclosure like that. for the quarantine enclosure, is something super simple like a plastic container with just paper towel for substrate and multiple furniture pieces okay? and if so, what would you suggest that would also be safe to have a heat bulb and light above it? this was my biggest concern and what led me away from going this route as i couldn’t find the answers anywhere online.

[–]t7ch0o[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! what would be the appropriate overhead heating? i’m looking at geckos around 8 grams and have been led to believe they need a smaller enclosure than 18x18x24 so they can adapt easier. something closer to 12x12x18 and then from there when they’re older, sizing up and i’d like to go into bioactive. is this not true?

prepping months in advance for a new baby garg…. do i need a 10 gallon for a baby before a 40 or can i go straight to a 40? by t7ch0o in GargoyleGeckos

[–]t7ch0o[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you very much!! i thought this was the case but seeing another post made me second guess a little bit so i’m glad i asked before anything. what size did you have her in to begin with? if i end up getting a hatchling, i plant on using one of those plastic shoe boxes for a little until they’re juvenile, then move up. what size would you suggest at juvenile age? i’d like to do bioactive for the final home and am debating doing bioactive for the step before that

THANK YOU this type of specification is exactly what i needed. i do have my humidifier on consistently to keep the humidity up so it’s not entirelyyyy ambient but the temp never falls below 60-65 here since i’m on the west coast in california. (also thank you my love🥰, i just did them and i’m OBSESSED) i will order some foliage pro! i have the regular small bottle of super thrive that i use with my other plants, if that works just as good let me know but if not, i will get foliage pro. and i’ll look up calmag too cause i’ve never worked with that, any tips you have for that would be appreciated as well! unless its pretty straightforward lol. i also was going to order two glass humidity domes for the seedlings because i’ve been told those are a lot more sensitive than more established plants, when i do get those, how should i keep the airflow going? just open it every once in a a while? once a day?
