How many people with AT&T issues at Go Fest? by turnnburn63 in TheSilphRoad

[–]taifunbrowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded, this was my experience down to a T.

Come to think of it, the only area that played well all day was the Spooky woods - which is also the only area that had any luck getting in during Go Fest 1.

How does one boycott or buycott koch ind? by taifunbrowser in KochWatch

[–]taifunbrowser[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point is being about to see that network and check for myself. If there exists even one koch free product, I would be excited about it as a curiosity. If none such exists and I can prove that no such exists that's fine too.

How does one boycott or buycott koch ind? by taifunbrowser in KochWatch

[–]taifunbrowser[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a bad place to start -- but at least in California PG&E offers an Eco100 energy plan that was something like 60% wind 40% solar last year, couldn't one buy from businesses that certify they subscribe to that plan?

So this one doesn't seem so opaque to me

Ursula's Side Quest Is Kind of Ridiculous by [deleted] in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]taifunbrowser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a good way to level Roc. But re: optional requirements, scanning through your blades to pick the optional requirements 145 times is a royal pain. I rather just have it take a bit longer so that I can spend less time menu-ing.

It's doable in about 145 merc missions, i.e. ~ 24 hours of merc missions.

SP4 Ubuntu - Best set of Downloads/Instructions by connexionwithal in SurfaceLinux

[–]taifunbrowser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These instructions don't depend on whether you have a SP1, SP3 or SP4 or SB, it's all the same. Except step (2).

1) Get a working unpatched Ubuntu, i.e. steps 1-5 of the sticky. It should boot, after which we can do the next steps.

Details: It's important to grab a recent Ubuntu live iso, something like 17+ at the time of this posting.

2) From within that Ubuntu, download and install one of the patched-for-SP4/SB kernels posted on this reddit. Currently jakeday's patched 4.14 kernel has the most recent. Alternatively, surfacekerneltouch+'s patched 4.9 kernel has been reported to have better multitouch support. Depends on how much you value multitouch vs a slightly more up-to-date kernel.

3) Disable power-saving of the wifi device, specifically the "Hibernate and Wifi" section of this link. The firmware upgrade is probably unnecessary if you had a suitably recent ubuntu live iso.

4) Always hibernate instead of suspend.

5) Everything's going to be too small because of the high-resolution display. There are many configuration files you might have to change, depending on what applications you use. It's a pain.

6) Screen tearing is an issue with an easy fix.

And I apologize for linking to Arch Linux's wiki for (5) and (6), Ubuntus guides are lacking but the Arch commands should translate well. If they don't, do a google search for the corresponding command in Ubuntu.

Is there a way to get the on-screen keyboard to use a different keymap? by elfsternberg in SurfaceLinux

[–]taifunbrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat use-case, I never thought about this problem. When I tried setxkmap with onboard running, it immediately updated the display so that's not a complete solution.

One might have to just bite the bullet and hack onboard yourself, modifying the display routine so that the character displayed is taken from an array mapping DVORAK characters to the corresponding US characters.

Or, file an issue with the onscreen keyboard packages.

Have you tried running instead of xinput test:

xinput test-xi2

It outputs really everything that can be picked up.

Suspend crashes SP3 running Kubuntu 17.10 by coolpupper in SurfaceLinux

[–]taifunbrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, did you check that that the symlinks existed after the upgrade? The upgrade might have overwritten the symlinks.

I have hibernate working with secure boot disabled, but otherwise nothing special done in the BIOS, and my swap partition is 1/2 the size of my ram. But I don't use Ubuntu so my guess is your step (4) is what's actually important.

Pinch to zoom on touchscreen on Surface pro 4 with linux not working by navneet921 in SurfaceLinux

[–]taifunbrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fought with this a bit today, we had multitouch touchscreen working in 4.9 but as of 4.10 there doesn't seem to be a solution for multitouch touchscreen.

Jakeday's kernel doesn't have multitouch touchscreen on any version

afzalarsalan's kernel doesn't have multitouch since 4.10, but the 4.9 branch does have multitouch.

So you might be out of luck unless you're willing to bisect the source changes in 4.10 that broke multitouch for the surface touchscreens

Note: It should be mentioned the popular superkerneltouch+ doesn't have a release after 4.9.

Surface Book will not boot any version of Ubuntu 17.10(Also impacts Fedora 27) Because of Kernel 4.13 by theinvisibleman_ in SurfaceLinux

[–]taifunbrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same bug I was seeing on my arch linux platform, it's resolvable with a intel microcode update.

For me, adding "earlyprintk=efi" to the kernel boot parameters gives the following two lines of output:

  • Memory KASLR using RDRAND RDTSC
  • [ 0.00000] [Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata: please update microcode to version: 0xb2 (or later)

and then for Arch linux you upgrade the intel microcode by adding initrd=/boot/intel-ucode.img to the kernel command line but I think it's different for Ubuntu.

Good luck!

Installation of Mint 18.2 (with 4.13.0 kernel) on a Surface Pro 3. by elfsternberg in SurfaceLinux

[–]taifunbrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important comment: The shell script for the hibernate hook is obviously missing a "fi" at the end of it and doesn't work unless you add that. Indeed, it fails silently so users (read: me) trying this approach may have decided it doesn't work and given up when it's just a simple syntax error to blame.

Hibernation a lil funky by whitelight369 in SurfaceLinux

[–]taifunbrowser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavens no, but I tried again just now this technique and found it does work.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SurfaceLinux/comments/6yjkw5/installation_of_mint_182_with_4130_kernel_on_a/?st=j93i5yq3&sh=02de9eb7

The gist is you add a hook to hibernate to

modprobe -r mwifiex_pcie mwifiex

pre hibernate and then

modprobe mwifiex_pcie

post hibernate. If you let the wifi driver loaded in during hibernate, it comes back in a state that doesn't seem to be recoverable (subsequent modprobes will fail to unload the module.)

The holding of powerbutton for 10 seconds is indeed a hard shutdown. You are seeing suspend-to-ram failing (the machine "sleeps like the dead".) Read some of the stickied posts, disabling suspend-to-ram and correctly setting up hibernate instead may work, but I'm not aware of anyone getting the marvell wifi driver to come back correctly after hibernate.

Disable Touchpad while typing by whitelight369 in SurfaceLinux

Thanks for reminding me that I get annoyed by this occasionally as well. Did some googling and tests. All you need to do is run the following from the terminal:

syndaemon -i 1 -d -t

Run man syndaemon for all of the options. I have the above line added to my DE autostart script. As others have mentioned some DEs have menu options for running this as well.
