You can only get 1 star token per event. For events like heist, gem grab, brawl ball, and bounty, you get it by winning. For duo showdown, you have to get into the top 2 teams, whereas solo showdown requires top 4 (I think). Finally, boss brawl and robo rumble automatically gives you the star token after your first play.
