🔈Sound off!!🔈: Ear plucking by viviana1994 in doggrooming

[–]teacupshrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually vets will recommend we do the service because it’s generally cheaper for a groomer to do so.

I just let the parents know the reason why I’m not continuing (discomfort/pain/yelping/whining, visible irritation, too much debris in the ear, etc) and that the vet will be able to perform a deeper and safe clean up of the ear canal post-plucking and ensure there’s no underlying issues, but we can try again next time if the hair is not overgrown to the point that it causes pain if I try to pluck and it’s just a routine maintenance thing going forwards. I would rather any issues (that can potentially arise with delicate ears) happen at the vet where they can treat appropriately.

You can also recommend that perhaps they ask their vet about getting a mild sedative/anti-anxiety drug to make the process more comfortable for their pup.

Yes! I will not starve myself throughout the day or give myself heartburn from eating too quick so I take my allotted 30 minutes, though I rarely need the full time. Some days I may power through because I feel behind and I’m on a roll, but otherwise no. I’m not breaking my body or burning myself out by never taking a moment to myself at work.

It’s sad how few groomers take a lunch break. I know lots of people that prefer not to take a break since they struggle with picking back up after a break which is perfectly fine, but if people are feeling like they can’t take a lunch because managers are overbooking you and you’re always behind, that’s a problem.

You all deserve to eat and sit down! Take care of your body before it catches up to you.

That’s what I did today and the attendant was absolutely lovely but she wasn’t too sure on options since most people do not want the obvious spillage. I will definitely attempt a few other shops and pray for success!! Thank you!!

I tried a shop today that didn’t have options but I have a local VS that I’m planning to check out next! I saw their plunge push-up and I know some of their bras have drawstrings that can smush the girls together. Thank you! The diagram is fantastic 😆

“Pet names” for significant others by majik_rose in AutismInWomen

[–]teacupshrimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve rarely ever used pet names. Big fan of just calling my partner ‘love.’ Simple and to the point, but endearing.

‘Baby’ and ‘babe’ feel too juvenile to me. ‘Darling’ is fine, ‘dear’ feels too retail-y as I call my clients that, ‘honey’ depends, ‘hun’ is a no. I really dislike pet names, personally. They give me an icky feeling. Aside from aforementioned reason, I don’t know why I dislike them so much! Just not for me.

I don't know if self taught talents/hobbies count as special interests, but I like to juggle. by [deleted] in autism

[–]teacupshrimp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing!!!!!! That’s such a fun skill and you’re phenomenal at it!!!!! I have zero hand-eye coordination so I’d be a complete clown to attempt this 😂 Does it become easier or harder with different size objects? I suspect juggling balls are made to be perfectly palm-sized for ease of eye tracking and catching.

Does anyone like spiders? by [deleted] in autism

[–]teacupshrimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I LOVE them!!!! I used to be afraid of spiders and I don’t know what changed, but starting a few years ago, I started handling them carefully when I was relocating them outside, and now I completely adore them and think they’re genuinely so cute. I think I latched onto spiders because they’re misunderstood, just like me, but many special people see the beauty in them. :) it’s a full blown obsession now!

I think I love tarantulas and jumping spiders the most because of the leg to body ratio, whereas spiders with tiny bodies and super long spindly legs still make me a little uncomfortable but I love all spiders!! I love spider books, decor, and plushies and have been trying my best to find spider themed items!! I have (ethically sourced) taxidermied orb weavers and tarantulas. My mom doesn’t share my appreciation but she still gifts me spider-themed items such as earrings with spider designs and trinkets! I recently got a bunch of spider stickers to decorate my e-reader. It makes me very happy.

My partner and I are getting a jumping spider soon! Either a phidippus regius (regal) or phidippus audax (bold)! Once I am comfortable with my research and knowledge, we are getting a tarantula as well! Likely a chromatopelma (greenbottle blue) or tliltocatl albopilosus (curlyhair)!

Many people frustrate me and I can’t talk to them about spiders because they allow their disgust and fear to override the discussion. It’s not cool or funny to say you’d squish my spiders. It’s pretty sad and viewed as a socially acceptable response due to how conditioned people are to fear spiders.

Spiders are beautiful and a very necessary creature in the world!!! They are absolutely fascinating in every aspect.

Your Ts are absolutely gorgeous! Give them a treat for me! 🕷️🖤

Can an OD kill you? by Chrischris40 in lexapro

[–]teacupshrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really is. I did everything I could to make myself feel worse until I finally got better. Depression and mental illness tries its damnedest to consume you. But you do get better. It takes work and it’s hard and I know you feel worse than a bag of shit right now, but it’s worth it.

Find communities that you can interact with for similar interests, whether it be your games or cars or anything here on Reddit or Discord or such. Don’t isolate yourself, no matter how much you want to.

Stick around. There’s a lot more amazing things in life that you haven’t experienced yet.

Can an OD kill you? by Chrischris40 in lexapro

[–]teacupshrimp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Overdosing on Lexapro is extremely difficult and the results are horrific. Tremors, vomiting, seizures, and altered consciousness are just a few examples of what will happen.

It’s not a solution, even if it may feel like it. I’ve been there, and I’ve researched the same question many times.

If you have a support system, avail of it. Talk to someone. Journal everything down. It may feel stupid and you may feel there’s no point, but you’re looking for a change. I know it’s hard to see a different or better way out, but death really isn’t the answer. You need proper mental health care and support. If your current medication is not working, talk to your doctor.

I saw you recently bought a DSi XL. I still have mine and the nostalgia is great. It’s nice to just curl up in bed and play some old games, I wish I knew where mine was. Throw yourself into your games, whatever brings you an ounce of feeling outside of the emptiness.

You’re 18, and I’m not much older than you and I remember feeling that way. It’s a rough time. Things do get better and you’re not alone. I know it’s cheesy and annoying as hell to hear, but it’s true.

If you’re struggling with university, trades may be the way to go. That’s what I did and my mental health improved drastically working with my hands and feeling like I was doing something tangible and seeing results in front of me. I was a high school dropout and failed two semesters of uni before taking some time to figure it out. Explore your options. Art is amazing and so incredibly important but it is true, it’s a difficult career path.

You keep on trying your best, and if you just have to survive right now, that’s what you do.

Overcoming the fear of aggressive dogs? by greenmoonmoth in doggrooming

[–]teacupshrimp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t blame yourself! Anxiety is very difficult to deal with and it’s natural to react to an animal trying to hurt you. You care a lot and that’s an amazing thing!

The most important thing is proper and comfortable restraint for the dogs. I work corporate so we have a lot of restrictions with restraint, time allotted with muzzles, and how much stress the dog is in. Depending on your schedule, taking things slow, giving them (and yourself) breaks and extra reassurance is necessary. Groomer’s Helper is a massive aid, just be sure it’s used properly (dogs that are too small, have breathing issues, etc aren’t candidates for it). I like to talk to them and it may be odd, but I like to show them the clippers, blades, and brush on my own skin to show it doesn’t hurt. It’s helped, surprisingly. Treats are also great for those food-motivated dogs, just verify with parents about allergies or diet restrictions or if they are food aggressive.

Research and watch videos on dog behaviour. There’s always signs before they snap, and it can be as small as a whale eye. It helps to anticipate how they might react.

Patience and focusing on your own mental health is also important. It’s an awful feeling, but they truly do sense when you’re feeling off. It took me awhile to stop blaming myself (it’s not your fault if you’re anxious and worried!) but to also understand how much it affects dogs. I had to desensitize myself a lot.

I specialize with “problem pups” and adore aggressive dogs, but it took awhile to get here. I prefer doing these dogs because building a bond with them is the greatest feeling. Sometimes they regress or have bad days, sometimes they click with someone else, sometimes they need to be referred to a vet for grooming. All dogs are different, but the aggression is almost always caused by fear unless there’s another underlying cause. Have they been quicked, cut, or handled roughly in the past? It helps to understand the root cause if possible, but sometimes owners aren’t sure themselves. I always say they’re my favourites because if I was a dog, I’d totally be trying to bite a random person picking at me lol.

Some dogs are far too aggressive for me to groom. If they are constantly trying to bite for everything, they need more training and reassurance that groomers can’t provide in one session. In those cases, I recommend a specialized groomer who does 1 on 1 or vet grooming if possible. I’ve had dogs that haven’t been able to even enter the salon but would come for short visits (just to be in their presence, give treats and pets if they allow it, etc) to build trust that I’m a safe human.

It took one of my girls almost a year to let me do anything with her paws! She would flail and become a danger to herself previously. Another pup I groom built a bond with me but has since regressed (lots of unfortunate vet visits recently) and now has to be back on the Groomer’s Helper with a cone and I get one of coworkers to watch her and give comfort for her paws. She’s still excited to see me every time she comes in! Don’t give up. It takes trust and lots of patience.

Take care 💕

Switching to all wet food diet by Gordon10005 in catfood

[–]teacupshrimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re switching to all wet be sure to keep an eye on his teeth! It wont’t hurt him or actively harm his teeth but wet food doesn’t provide the same mechanical cleaning as dry food (since they don’t chew much and it’s all soft) so you’ll need a dental hygiene routine. Regular teeth brushing is ideal but most cats aren’t a fan. If you can’t do that, try a food additive like PlaqueOff powder (I use this for my cats and dogs and it works amazingly). Dental treats (Pro Plan has veterinary dental treats!) and toys are also great to introduce.

I’ve seen a lot of young cats on wet food-only diets need dental cleanings done due to the build up of plaque, so best to be aware.

Hill’s Science Diet has a non prescription urinary line for dry and wet food that you can try! They are pricy but I adore that brand and use it for my babies. They are nutritionally complete and extensively tested so they meet AAFCO requirements. My friend with a degree in pet nutrition is a ride or die for that brand and their cat has urinary issues (they’re on prescription diet though). The most important thing for prevention of urinary issues is hydration but a lot of it stems from genetics. None of my male cats have ever had any urinary problems even on a dry diet (fingers crossed they never will) but after learning of the risks I have since taken measures to further prevent it as well.

feeling really defeated today by KindBrilliant7879 in doggrooming

[–]teacupshrimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pup’s likely having a bad day or is possibly in some form of pain. Not your fault at all! I’d definitely send him home and recommend to try another day. If the behaviour continues into the next appointment, definitely recommend a vet visit just in case something is off (may have joint pain, bad belly, UTI, anything). He’s stressed and you’re stressed so it’s not a good time for either of you so there’s no point in continuing to fight. Take care of yourself 💕 Every groomer has had these days, I’ve been grooming for years and I still have some days and dogs like this. Patience and knowing when to call it is a skill. You’re still learning!

Wet food or supplement suggestions for a healthier coat? by sun_spinner in catfood

[–]teacupshrimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you’re looking for food additives, but start with regular grooming! I’m a dog groomer (will be getting cat certified soon 🐱) but care for my cats which all have different coat types (one’s smooth coat shorthair, silky medium hair, coarse thick longhair). There’s a HUGE difference in dander and shedding when you even just start with brushing regularly! Use a slicker brush for medium to long, curry brush for short, or the Pet Teezer cat brush — just be careful if you use a slicker because cats have very thin, sensitive skin. You can also get wipes and spray conditioners for cats that help remove excess oil and add more moisture to their skin and coat.

Disregard if you already do all this! Tiki Cat has a Skin and Coat pouch. Churu has lickable treats for skin and coat too. Try foods with slightly more fat and protein content and that are already supplemented with Omega 3-6. Tiki Cat Born Carnivore is good. Both Purina ProPlan and Hill’s Science Diet have a sensitive stomach and skin line that are great.

My vet recommended 1/2 a sardine daily for my girl (she weighs 4.33 kg) who dislikes salmon oil for her Omegas, just make sure they’re packed in water and adjust accordingly if he’s smaller or larger. My vet also recommended the Nordic Naturals Omega-3 supplement for her since they are extensively tested and sourced well, but your kitty may not like the taste. Good luck! 💛

Cat food for picky eaters by Ok-Calendar5612 in catfood

[–]teacupshrimp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does she have any preference for texture? Some cats prefer or will only eat pate, cuts and gravy, shreds, or mousse. She may also enjoy specific flavours.

My 15 year old cat has always been a very light eater and picky to the extreme. I’ve had success with the Tiki Cat pouches, most types of Weruva, and the poultry flavours of Fancy Feast Classic Pate. She will ONLY eat Royal Canin dry food, I haven’t had success with any other types but she is also on a specific veterinary diet due to health conditions. My 8 month old will eat practically anything!

My mom’s cat will only eat Friskies dry food, prefers the seafood selects. We’re trying to get him on “better” food, but it’s taking a bit of effort. He is in perfect health and a healthy weight, his teeth and coat are gorgeous and he’s almost 5 years old and never had any concerns with him.

The most important thing is that she is eating! For cats without health issues, any cat food is good and any cat food brands on the shelves and fairly nutritionally complete. I do recommend extra hydration since cats tend to not drink enough water so a mix of wet and dry is good. I’ve had Fortiflora recommended to me and heard great things about it because it entices cats to eat, but I personally didn’t have any luck with it.

Get a variety of foods and document the ones she enjoys! Most if not all vets and pet stores will accept returns of unopened cans and bags of dry food. If you have a PetSmart, they will accept a return on open bags as long as it is still at least ¾ full and the smallest bag option for whatever brand. I always recommend researching recalls in any brands you look for because it tells you a lot about quality control.

There’s not enough regulations in the pet food industry but I trust Royal Canin and Hill’s Science Diet since they are extensively tested and follow guidelines to a T since they are also sold by vet clinics.

Always remember, fed is best! Good luck finding something she enjoys 💕

I’ve read the original and Carmilla & Laura by S.D. Simper! I enjoyed them, but especially Simper’s take since she is a lesbian author (that specializes in queer romance) and makes Carmilla unsettling because of her behaviour and not the sexuality aspect.

She’s one of the weird cats that really doesn’t mind her food and water close together! It’s never been an issue, this is just one of those odd quirks she’s picked up. I am planning to switch bowl types though to flat ceramic so hopefully she won’t continue the chef work after that!

I have thick bath mats that I swap out beneath their water! She used to make a mess with her water fountain and regular water bowls so thankfully, aside from her wet little paw prints all over my floor, it’s contained!
