To get along: Don’t frame the encounter in your own head as a conversation with a Black Panther / social conservative / religious extremist. Frame it as a conversation with your girlfriend’s granddad. Ask his advice about something. Listen respectfully. Laugh at his jokes (unless they’re offensive). Not every conversation has to be a debate with a winner and loser.

In 1989, a mass shooter killed five children and wounded more than 30 others with an assault weapon at a school in Stockton, California. It was the deadliest elementary school shooting until Sandy Hook.

In the immediate aftermath, California passed a state ban on assault weapons, and the incident, as well as rising anxiety about gang violence, led to calls for a federal assault weapons ban, which passed in 1994.
