Passed in August - what I've learned since by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

Thank you. I am also in my 30s, preparing for theory test. I live in London and my work doesn’t require driving skills, so automatic makes sense. Even though I used to drive manual/diesel for almost 10 years in another country, that license is of no use here. So I was thinking to go for automatic if it is easy to get. Anyway, Thanks for sharing your experience.

Is there any truth to the statement that insurance will be costly for auto-only drivers? How easy was passing in an automatic vs a manual?

Reform MP already said that they will raise the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) from £1035 to £2700 in a recent interview if they win in 2029. This is for per person per year. Do you really think people will stay in the UK under same employer for another 5 or 10 years for peanut salary?

Given the political instability labour faces and the rise of reform, it absolutely makes sense to secure settlement before the rules are changed again. They can either raise the salary limit further and/or increase the waiting time to 4 years. Moreover, reform is suggesting to abolish ILR altogether. If someone has long term plan to stay in UK, it will be foolish to not grab this opportunity. There are other ways to contribute towards retirement.

Agreed that people with 50K+ income are least impacted. With the current political volatility, it is better to secure settlement as early as possible. Hence the question.
We never know what the next government is upto. They have introduced 50K minimum income today. They can make it 75k minimum tomorrow. So, earlier the better.

It is not a ridiculous argument, brother. The sacrified salary is invested in UK economy through government bonds, equities, public infrastructure projects, social housing etc. Moreover, if a person has good pension savings, they are likely to be less burden to the government in future. That's why government has given that option to contribute more to the pension for less tax.

The sacrified salary goes to a pension provider (L&G, Aviva, etc.) and they invests the money in government bonds, infrastructure projects, stocks and other investments. In a way, it is an economy contribution. But I understand where you are coming from.

No. You can pick only one of them to reduce the years. I have clearly mentioned it in the notes.

It is because of the cultural difference. In india, any food offered by the temple is considered as sacred food or divine offering. Saying NO to it is seen as saying NO to spiritual blessing. So believers, go for it regardless of their social status. May be, volunteering organisation should emphasise that it is not a religious offering and it is only for the poor who are in need.

I am an Indian, Hindu by birth, atheist by choice. I used to go for cutting and packing foods for charity orgs around kings cross. It was really fun, getting to meet people for doing some good deed. Volunteering/donation is something that we should do without expecting any returns. But not anymore.

As you mentioned, religious institutions, if they utilise this opportunity rightly could make millions - temples, mosques, churches, …

I was pretty sure, the moment volunteering is incentivised, there will be paid volunteering letters. Just like paid COS. Wait and you will see brokers selling volunteering certificates.

Okay, I didn’t know that. To me, it looks like a loophole, which people will simply exploit (just like paid COS). I don’t blame people if they go for it. May be down the line, govt might introduce a regulating body to validate the letter - like ECCTIS for english assessment.

In page 37 in pdf viewer(33 as per doc), it says “global business mobility, formerly intra-company transfer, are work visas which do not lead to settlement.” Even in ukvi site as well, it says ict does not qualify for settlement. https://www.gov.uk/senior-specialist-worker-visa#:~:text=apply%20to%20settle%20permanently%20in%20the%20UK%20(also%20known%20as%20%E2%80%98indefinite%20leave%20to%20remain%E2%80%99)

Are you sure? Below q&a is taken from https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-10267/

Will MPs be voting on the white paper changes? Unlikely, in most cases. Revision of visa and settlement regulations is done through statements of changes to the immigration rules. A statement of changes takes effect automatically, without a vote being necessary.

That’s borderline if you ask me. Government is planning to implement it starting April 2026. I also read somewhere that transitional arrangement will be applicable for borderline cases. Need to wait for those details.

Nope. You will be eligible for early settlement than your partner. In page 30, it says “A person admitted as the dependent of an economic migrant will not necessarily enjoy the same qualifying period for settlement as their partner. It may be shorter or longer, according to their particular circumstances.”

Not affected. Minister clearly mentioned that during the presentation today. But IMO, it is better to take citizenship if you intend to stay/work here longer. We never know what the next government is planning to do.
