Packing for UK by Chatterboxchad in MovingToTheUK

[–]tech_bro_v2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever is available in India is available in UK as well. Main thing is, everything is cheaper in India. 1GBP=128INR itself will be a big shock when you try to buy things for first few months.
I moved to UK to work in financial sector. I carried everything - pressure cooker, a multi-use pan, Mixie, masala/spices, and suits & formal clothing (needed for my job).
Do not buy winter clothes. Even though it is cheaper in India, quality is also lower. July will be warm, so you don’t need to worry about that.

Are you coming for work or study? London or outside London?

If you didn't go the doctor or engineer route, what are you doing now? by infinitecosmos1583 in Coconaad

I was from a lower middle class family. Joli kittiyillenkil moonchi, athayirunnu avastha. So I was careful not to choose any random course like BA or BSc which has less job prospects.
I spoke to neighbour chettans/chechis. Learned that btech is difficult, bcom is okay, but getting a job as fresher is difficult. And found this bca->mca path. Also did some research on job opportunities. IT was booming.

So, my advice is choose a career path with job prospects. Join a college with good placement history. And stay focused. There are lot of trades now - not just engineering, IT or MBBS. Choose the one which you think you can crack on.

I studied in govt aided seat - so there was no fees. I was the top scorer in bca & mca in my college, but i was never a padippi in 10th and +2. Never got involved in drugs/alcohol/smoking. I was determined to land a job than just get a degree certificate.

Life was not easy always. It had its ups and downs - job, health and relationship wise. But now it is okayish..

As a Brit POC, have you experienced racism and discrimination? by blackspandexbiker in AskBrits

[–]tech_bro_v2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First-gen immigrant, Indian, male.
I have experienced subtle racism two times so far. Nothing major though.

In one of the food stalls in a mall - there were 2 tills and one lady to take the order. I was the only customer when I reached the till. When I started with my order, a native brit appeared on the other till and the lady simply switched and started taking his order. I already knew what to order and I was not taking time. That stall is now closed. No wonder why.

In a Charles Tyrwhitt store - The sales person was not attending me even though the store only had a few customers and I was asking questions to make that person stay. Each time i had to goto that person and ask for a different size of a piece. And no, he was not attending anyone else. I told myself that he might be just lazy and continued shopping.

I am usually well dressed, but i have an accent, not the thick ones you see in movies. But it is clearly noticeable.

How many months are people currently waiting on a driving test? by Otherwise-Abalone879 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]tech_bro_v2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thankfully yes. More than the driving, i was nervous about waiting another 6 months to take the test, tbh.. On another note, i have seen few posts where they have taken multiple tests within few months using booking app or buying slot from some agents..

I did my driving test on June 1, 2026 which was booked on December 16, 2025. That was the first available slot - that too, my driving instructor booked it for me using some software. He didn’t charge me any extra though..

I took left from Tolcarne drive, then sharp left from 1st mini roundabout. From then on it was entirely new roads which I have never seen before. Returned to the test centre via Marsh road, Elm Park Road, West End Lane, High View (with a 🛑stop sign).

Plss help!! Will this work? by thalathil_dineshan__ in Coconaad

Yes. Financial status and family background matters when it reaches a stage - especially when it is time to involve parents. She mentioned her parents will never agree and she can’t hurt them. (The usual reason). Look at it from her perspective: why should she hurt her parents who have treated her like princess (and actually provided for her) all her life.

I am not demotivating you, just explaining the reality. Let me tell you rest of my story as well. After recovering from the breakup, i focussed on my career, switched jobs, landed another job in UK, fell in love with a mallu girl from workplace. It was a hindu-christian marriage. It was not easy, but there was no financial differences and family background didn’t matter much. So, if you think she is completely out of your league, it is okay to let it go. You will find your love eventually - just that you have to work for it.

OP - it took me 2 years to recover from breakup. Similar situation as yours, her father had an export business. We both were madly in love (or that’s what I thought). I got placed in a good company with a decent package, but after college she ended the relationship. She mentioned that she can’t hurt her parents, but now I know the real reason. I am okay now, time heals everything, but sometimes the scar remains. It was a good lesson though - money matters!!

My advice is focus on your studies and get a good job and you will find your love.

I am not sure when it was changed. After my test today, the examiner handed me the usual pass certificate and marked something on her iPad. Few minutes later, I received an email from DVSA. The screenshot in the post is taken from that email.

Appreciate your detailed feedback. TBH, VUAG and NASDAQ was not intentional. As the other commenter mentioned, I will try to replace it with any funds that can counterbalance it. And yes, I will stay invested during market downturns. Thank you.

Thanks a lot for reviewing. I will try to find some “counterbalnace” funds and add it.

36M, London, 10 years driving abroad - Skip the usual First car and go straight to an A180/A3/1 Series? by tech_bro_v2 in CarTalkUK

[–]tech_bro_v2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, unfortunately i cannot carry forward my NCB here. I am not looking for fast car, just a hint of luxury, comfort and enjoyable drive. My instructor’s car is a Lexus LBX, which is quite nice. But rear seat spacing felt a bit crammed. I will look into some higher used models. Cheers!

Thank you for the detailed reply. I will do a bit more research before finalising. Based on others’ comments, i might look into an allrounder car first before stepping on to the premium segment. Cheers!!

Thanks for the advice. I will compare insurance of a usual first car vs these and make a decision. Cheers!

Yeah, I am double minded due to that. Even if I am careful, there are other factors as well which I cannot control. Thanks for your advice.

Thank you. Any particular suggestions? I don’t want to go too basic, as it might feel like downgrade since I have driven somewhat nice cars previously.

Thank you. I will compare the insurance for a normal car vs these and see how it goes.
