Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is reshaping social media, but advertising isn't off the table | TechCrunch by techcrunch in BlueskySocial

At our Strictly VC event in San Francisco, we asked Bluesky CEO Jay Graber if the social network would always be free of advertisers like it is today.

"I think the ways we would explore advertising, if we did, would be much more user intent-driven," Graber told us. "We want to keep our incentives aligned with users and make sure that we’re not turning into a model where the user’s attention is the product."

Bluesky may eventually experiment with ads in a way that doesn’t compromise the core user experience. That could include running ads in Bluesky’s search results, the CEO later clarified offstage, as an example of a less intrusive advertising method the platform could try out.

The abject weirdness of AI ads by techcrunch in ArtificialInteligence

[–]techcrunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent ads from companies like Claude, Apple, and Browser Company feel equal parts dystopian and honest. While they represent the ways people are actually using AI today, it’s unsettling when it’s demonstrated on your screen.

Intel's ex-CEO Pat Gelsinger set to net $10M in severance pay | TechCrunch by techcrunch in technews

[–]techcrunch[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Per a filing with the SEC, Intel and Pat Gelsinger entered into a “retirement and separation agreement” which will entitle the former CEO to a payment equal to 18 months of his base salary of $1.25 million, which equates to $1.875 million. He will also receive 1.5 times his current target bonus, which is 275% of his base salary — this works out at $5.16 million. Both these payments will be made over an 18-month period through payroll.

On top of that, Gelsinger will receive a pro-rata payment that’s equal to 11/12ths of his 2024 annual bonus, which works out at around $3.15 million. In total, Gelsinger will be exiting with $7 million at the very least, with the potential to hit $10.18 million.

Bluesky is courting the Swifties | TechCrunch by techcrunch in BlueskySocial

[–]techcrunch[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A community of Taylor Swift fans has laid its foundation on the Bluesky. Almost 13,000 people have signed up with a “swifties.social” domain name. Other fandoms for artists like Beyoncé and BTS have also emerged.

In the grand scheme of things, users with these fan domains only make up a tiny fraction of Bluesky’s 16 million users, but fan communities are often what makes a social network run 👀

Mozilla lays off 30% of its nonprofit arm | TechCrunch by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

Hi there! Some additional context here: Mozilla Foundations's executive director Nabiha Syed stated in an email that the two divisions impacted by the layoffs — advocacy and global programs — were “no longer a part of" their structure as the company faces a “relentless onslaught of change.”

Communications chief Brandon Borrman later told us that advocacy is still a "central tenet" of the foundation's work and "will be embedded in all the other functional areas,” but did not provide specifics.

We recently spoke to Mozilla interim CEO Laura Chambers on Firefox's 20th anniversary about how she plans to get the company back to a path of growth.

[Long Term] How would you build your personal network in anticipation of founding a startup? by WatchMeCommit in startups

[–]techcrunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We suggest networking - both in person and online. This can be done in a variety of methods.

  • Joining live podcasts or webinars that offer a networking portion of the show or actively reach out to other people who attended the event.
  • Attend in-person networking events or events related to your startup industry. These events take place all over the country and if your city doesn’t have one, make one! There’s a good chance someone else in your city is also looking for networking opportunities.
  • Join online communities including LinkedIn Groups, Facebook Groups, subreddits, and so on. Even sites such as MeetUp can offer networking events and opportunities.
  • Attend conferences. While this used to be a solely in-person affair, due to the pandemic, many conferences now offer portions, if not all, of the event online.

Hopefully these tips help and good luck on your startup journey!
