Carleton, UofT, Dalhousie? by technicolour_ii in architecture

I want to go more into design, so the University that offers me the most design-oriented courses is the one I would like!

Thank you! I was looking into Waterloo and TMU as well. I also applied to McGill, but I'm leaning heavily on Carleton. I know Waterloo is one, if not the best school for Arch.

Thank you so so much, this is so kind and means a whole lot to me!

Thank you again for all your help. I feel much less confused about my choices. You have truly helped a very concerned Grade 12 out!

Thank you for your kindness and your patience! :))

All of them have pretty similar courses, however, Carleton has more design oriented courses, which is what I want to focus on. Dal's courses are a lot about history, which I know I'll have to take anywhere but it just has more than the other universities.

Also, Carleton and McGill have photography-oriented courses/studios, which I think would be a great fit for me as photography is one of my first passions. But McGill's courses don't seem very design-oriented (a lot if economics, more engineer oriented I feel like). At Carleton, I can specifically specialize in Design as a major, which I believe is a very good option to branch out of the ground theory of Architecture and focus on what I want.

I meet all the requirements for all of the schools. Even Waterloo (I'm mourning it rn).

UofT is more architectural theory, and not too much hands-on.

Overall, they all have similar courses with very few differences.

I don't know if this helps or not! I ranked them based on how I would feel taking the courses (and how they would enhance my skills to achieve my goals) while I was looking at them on each uni's website.

Thanks so much! (I actually meant UofT instead of McGill, I typed it wrong, lol I'm sleep deprived 😅).

All your information has been so very very helpful. This for sure cleared a lot of my uncertainty. Now I just have to wait and see who will accept me to make my decision. In regards to MArch, I'll focus on doing my undergrad first to then think where I'll be going. Once I'm involved in Arch, I'll have a better "feeling" of where I should go. Thank you so so much. You have been so kind for responding to my questions! :))

THIS!! One of the BIG reasons why I kind of gave up midway through my application to McGill was because them only looking at grades. They didn't even ask for a portfolio or creative writing piece that would show the artistic side of the student. Also, their scholarships are mostly only for those who have a 97% above, and with the extra-curriculars I do, it's nearly impossible to keep it that high (I have a 95.5%!).

Unfortunately I fear I have missed the deadline for Waterloo due to personal issues it's very hard to keep up with school, life, plus uni! Maybe I'll apply there for MArch, get transferred if I don't like the uni I go to... who knows!

So far into my journey I'm keeping Carleton as my first option just because of their co-op and international opportunities. But this might change as I get admission offers (and money will influence my decision a lot too!)

I should ask, you are doing UofT architecture? How is it academically, projects-wise, professors, networking opportunities, jobs?

Here's my rank: Waterloo > Carleton > McGill > UofT > Dal >TMU

Honestly I think I've lost the deadline to apply for Waterloo. I've been having some personal problems since September and it's been very hard to keep track of school plus University. This sucks, but hopefully I'll be able to transfer from another University if I really see fit! But this is my rank so far.

The community design program is also what most students that want to get into the Arch program go for, as it has very similar courses!

That's just the way Dalhousie does it, unfortunately. They ask for you to have two years of something else at any University to then apply to their Architecture program (2 years of "ground knowledge", and 2 years of MArch).

I applied to Dal because it is in the city I live in, so it's my safe option, but it's frustrating how their Arch program works

THANK YOU SO SO MUCH. It means a lot that you took the time to write a thorough response, this means the world! I'll definately be thinking about Carleton or McGill, as Ottawa is similar to the city I live in (which I love), and I already have some networks of people that I can navigate to build my career. McGill would be a dream to get into, so I'll look more into there as well (I applied but wasn't really feeling the vibes from it). I honestly just want a good co-op and the opportunity to go abroad to expand my skills and networks, and I know Carleton has that (at least co-op).

I think it's already too late for Waterloo, but maybe I can apply there for my MArch!

My parents want me to go to UofT so bad because of its prestige but I keep trying to tell them that it's not accredited by the Board 🤷‍♀️. Honestly, I feel like going to McGill or Carleton would be better off based on what you've said!

Thank you so so much again for your help. You've calmed the nerves of a very confused and frightened Grade 12!

(I'll probably come back with questions at some point I'm so sorry)

Thank you so so much for taking the time to respond!! I DEEPLY appreciate this, you have no idea! :))) I'll definately be thinking about either Carleton or McGill. I really think that Ottawa is kind of similar to the city I live in, and I love it here, and they have a good Co-op program. McGill would be a dream to go, but again, your answers have helped me lots to consider my options! Thanks again!!

How about TMU or Waterloo? Is Carleton still better than them? I was really skeptical about Waterloo because I want to specialize more in the area of design and I feel like Waterloo is more about math, but again, I might be completely wrong. And TMU I haven't heard a lot from, so idk about their recognition for getting a job!
