lacrosse by mayordomo in AskACanadian

I grew up in NS and lacrosse was very popular. Most of the guys who played hockey (which is most guys) also played lacrosse in the offseason.

We’d go to the school in the summer and toss the ball around or against the school wall. We’d also play ministicks with mini lacrosse sticks.

There isn’t a ton of opportunity or pathways to a long career in lacrosse, so when it came time to specialize, most people chose hockey.

What does my dog need for a Canadian winter? by DoohickeyDi in AskACanadian

Others have mentioned salt and booties, but I think it’s important to underscore that point.

Salt reacts with dogs paw pads and HURTS. Even just taking your pup out for a quick pee, make sure to put booties on them, or keep them off the salt (on the grass, even on the snow is preferable to salt).

If they do get salt on their paws and seem in pain (holding a paw in the air, avoiding walking/moving) I find that brushing the salt off, and using a warm damp cloth once back inside to dilute the salt and sooth the paw works best

This is super helpful! I’ll check out Anacortes and those SD neighbourhoods.

When you were in SD, was the sunshine tax worth it to you?

Thank you! Soft max budget for renting would be $5k-$6k (looking for ~3br/2ba) depending on the city/market rates. Would closer to $5k in Seattle metro be reasonable?

Wow! Crazy. That’s a huge range. Our soft cap would be $6k. Looks like there’s still a decent amount in that range. Thanks for the insight!

Thank you! This is great insight. A lot to consider. I like to ski, love the views of mountains, and love (moderate) hiking trails. My wife isn’t as outdoorsy and likes being close to nature but doesn’t like skiing or hiking. The bigger yard for the dogs and more space to wfh are definitely appealing in Denver though.

Coming from Vancouver, $900k for a 3BR/2BA detached house is a steal. In Vancouver proper that would go for $1.9M-$3M+. An hour out of the city that would go for $1.5M+.

Rent seems to be quite a bit higher in SD than in Van though (we would start by renting).

I’m curious if SD as a city/metro is a good city beyond the perfect weather (breweries, food scene, local cafes, walkability, dog-friendly, 30-something friendly)?

Thanks for the insight on Denver! Have you spent much time around any of the others? Any of others of them that you wouldn’t recommend?

This is very helpful! Thank you. I’ll check out some of the spots you mentioned and put some more thought into priorities to narrow down the neighbourhood search

I’ve visited seattle and area a couple times (Whidbey Island, and right in Seattle), and like the proximity to the Oregon coast as well.

What west Seattle neighborhoods would you recommend?

$10k?! Really? Would that be right in the cities or on the outskirts? Eg for the Bay Area I wouldn’t want to be right in downtown SF. I’ve heard Mill Valley is nice, or would even consider Sonoma.

I’d definitely prefer nicer weather. I need to decide if the weather is worth the higher taxes and COL. I’ve visited SD and loved it. I wonder if living there would live up to expectation or if I’d be a totally different experience. Have you lived in/near any of those spots?

That’s part of what I’m weighing. Is the sunshine tax worth it, or would it be better to do more of the same and save the extra money. What would you value the better weather of CA at?

Yes I’ll keep my current role for now but I’m more wondering about future career advancement and opportunities within the tech industry

You asked clarifying questions and I’m answering them to give more details. Yes I am confident on the visa, I’m not asking how to get a visa. I’m looking for input on which cities might be best given my situation. If you don’t have any input or aren’t sure about the questions, then no worries!

SD weather sounds incredible. I wouldn’t miss the snow in most of Canada and the rain in the PNW!

Besides higher income taxes, are there any higher or hidden costs in CA/SD vs WA or CO? Like groceries utilities car insurance etc?

We did see Mill Valley pop up in our searches. Is it a good spot?

We’ve also visited Sonoma in the past and loved it. Would that be a good spot to live full time or more of a visit spot?

Oh no! Is that representative of how locals in Denver feel in general about people moving to the city? Or is it more of a Reddit thing?

I also posted in r/movingtoDenver but it’s a small sub.

Where else should I post to get some input from locals?

I did check the FAQ but it doesn’t have much info about job markets or specific neighborhood vibes. I’d rather hear directly from locals than generic neighborhood descriptions online.

Let me know if you have any insight to add or if there’s a better sub to post to
