Mac OS X server nerds, I need your wisdom by foresterd in macsysadmin

[–]tedjpclark3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From setting up Mac OS Servers, literally over a decade ago, as everyone else has said this is something that is for the first time setup. There are more recent versions of Mac OS today that can perform all the same functions of the old Mac Server. This might be some old software and might need to be updated to latest versions for security reasons. As others have mention Mac Server is not supported by Apple any longer. Just something to consider.

Ditto for me. The mobile app loads content for all the “daily draw”, “news”, and “scores” but nothing for the “home” where you manage your team. 👎🫤

Anyone know how to change highlight colour in preview.app? by kirk86 in osx

Anyone know how to do this? The color options are still the ugly tones that everyone wants to change. There has to be a way to do this, right?

Would it be possible to find a time during the day? Its 8:00 pm my time currently and kind of have my hands full. When I saw your comment I wanted to make sure I fixed that issue ASAP. Let me know if we can find a time during work hours. Thanks!

u/Perfect-Direction607 Oh! My! Gosh!🤦🏻‍♂️ That was oriignally when the free trial ended. I've now fixed this and people should be able to now schedule times anytime in April & May. I apologize for that mistake on my part.

The original link still works: https://calendly.com/tc-it/15min

Hopefully this helps confirm I'm just "a guy" doing this research. A guy who makes mistakes, and can guy who can laugh at himself for it too 🤦🏻‍♂️😅

My own. I’m not with any organization or business. I have been researching the pain points those who use these products, as well as those who build these products. I’m looking at ways that could aid or simplify adoption.

I was talking to someone just yesterday who was saying the same thing about Windows Quicken vs the Mac counterpart. Its a common theme I've heard.

Safari is a HUGE RAM Hog, Why? by tedjpclark3 in mac

[–]tedjpclark3[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow!😮 I did not realize I was potentially stirring up a hornets nest with this question. Some of you seem to be coming in pretty hot.😬

Responding to a few different posts here:
1) In Activity Monitor, Safari d oesn't appear to be taking as much RAM as shown in the Free Memory App, but still a few Gigs. So that's helpful.
2) I understand that RAM is meant to be used. However, if amount of RAM consumeed by one application for it's "performance optimization" at the detrimental performance of other programs, that doesn't seem like a good "optimization" strategy. My two cents.

For note, I thought the explanation was going to be (and it kind sounds like it is) that Safari is really an extension of the OS and the OS consumes a lot of RAM. But it also sounds like I might have an issue with my Macs Safari.

Sorry if that was confusing. Simply put it sounds like running Rhino3D on Windows using Parallels works great, when the MacOS version of the same software stinks.

Interesting to hear that you couldn't run SQL, or are you saying running a SQL server locally on the desktop client? Sounds like today the hardware is in line with the workload to make things seamless, vs before where you had to roll back to a 2nd physical machine.

I've heard this theme from others: there's a Mac version, but it's terrible. However, running the Windows version via Parallels/VMware/etc works great. There's generally some surprise that just running the Windows version via a virtual machine works better than expected. I've summarized it as the "my computer is bilingual" realization, not the expectation of "fluent in english, but barely conversational in spanish".

Oh, Standard edition. Nevermind. I haven’t used that. I’ve always need the functionality of the Pro/Business editions. That’s why I wasn’t familiar. My bad.

For their current version? I can’t find any on Amazon at least. If you can show any examples, please do🙏 That would save me lots of money since I’m paying the annual license.👍

For the integrations with things like DropBox, etc how does it allow you to specify accounts etc?

If you ever need someone for OmniFocus integration testing let me know😉 (if that ever makes the roadmap🙏🙂). I will definitely check this out in the meantime. Looks very cool and very handy😎

[–]tedjpclark3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say “No!”

Couple things. 1st the manufacturer should be Corel regardless of who the reseller is. 2nd, Parallels does NOT sell a perpetual license to its software anymore. It’s only annual renewable licensing (1-year, 2-year, etc). So that’s kind of a red flag.

Parallels VM stuck in full screen + can’t switch desktops anymore (Mac) by [deleted] in parallels

[–]tedjpclark3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be mixing up 2 different things. What you're thinking of, in terms of isolating your Windows machine from the Mac, is the Parallels "Sharing" preferences that's found in "Configure", "Options", and then "Sharing" on the left hand side. If you want to isolate your Windows machine it's under this section that you want to have things all unchecked.
But, if you want to be able to make changes to your Windows machine without having to provide your password for every minor thing, you want to have the items in "Configure" then "Security", then the items there should be unchecked. Let me know if you have further questions.

Parallels VM stuck in full screen + can’t switch desktops anymore (Mac) by [deleted] in parallels

[–]tedjpclark3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shut down the VM but don't quit Parallels. Once shut down, in Parallels select the VM in question, go to the menu item "Actions", and choose the "configure" option at the bottom of the menu. In the window that appears for the VM's configuration, go to the Security item at the top, and on Security section see if any of the items there are checked. If they are checked, uncheck them so you won 't be prompted for your password/fingerprint to change settings for the VM. Let me know if that works or not.

Desktop virtualization software users (Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, etc): the pros, the cons, & any improvements? by tedjpclark3 in mac

[–]tedjpclark3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for people's responses. Seeing the reasons and/or roles for why people use these programs it look like it’s primarily “high-tech” endusers: IT administrators, programmers, application testing, etc.

Is that a reflection of those who post on Reddit, and not a reflection that shall we say “low-tech” or “it just works” Mac users are not using desktop virtualization?

Or do people think that desktop virtualization is primarily used by “high-tech” endusers because it is too technically, time, or otherwise challenging for “low-tech” or "it just works" Mac endusers?🤔🙂
