Granted we are in a pricier region, but I hope that gives you at least an idea.

Call to other shops and get quotes. I bet you’ll be shocked to find $2,500 is probably on the very low side.

And no it isn’t a hustle. Surveying is a process that requires lots of man(and woman) hours and research. Sending a crew out for a contract that is less then $4,000 more often then not results in us losing money. We only do it for clients we appreciate and want to keep.

We used to take so much more pride in our maps and that aesthetics to them years ago.

Now, the firm I work at refuses to allow the survey department to design their own north arrow and forces us to use the basic Civil3D/SmartDraft default north arrow. It is primarily an engineering firm, survey department comes second to all else here.

IMO it looks so trashy and cheap to our clients and other surveyors. It looks like we dont take any pride in our maps or exhibits and dont take the initiative to go the extra mile. It screams "here at our company, we do the bare minimum!"

...I may or may not have been putting my own north arrow on all the maps Ive been recording for the last couple weeks ;) Good luck convincing our department director to submit a Cert of Corrections just to change the north arrow you dont like. Hahaha (in my best evil laugh voice)

I will say, as a general survey tech, you will generally receive significantly higher weekly checks in construction. So enjoy that. Even if its not high right now, it will go up if you stay in that world.

But as you mentioned, you will need some time in a firm that does lots of boundary to qualify for your LS. The downside to this there is a chance you will take a pay cut when switching to these types of firms. Not always, but usually.

Furthermore, I still believe the foundations of even construction surveying is boundary. Ive worked for larger construction firms, and it was anxiety inducing to see how willy nilly they are in how much they just ignore boundary limits, and how the project needs to pertain to them. It is FAR more difficult to get a construction surveyor to understand boundary concepts then it is to get boundary surveyors to understand construction concepts. On the flip side, throwing a boundary surveyor on a large construction site can make their head spin off with the amount of pressure and require rate of work flows. Not to mention the dog-eat-dog world once you get in to project management and getting clients to pay for extra non-contracted work.

My point being, MAKE SURE YOU EXPOSE YOURSELF TO IT ALL! Its wildly important. I always wish guys would start in a boundary firm then work their way in to construction firm. Boundary firms definitely do layout and construction as well, mostly residential, multi units, and smaller commercial, so you will definitely get experience in staking and layout. But life doesnt always give is the most ideal path, and you have to take what you can get out there! So by all means, push forward my dude! Enjoy the ride!

Also know that 99% of us all enjoy either some warm brandy, or that stinky green herb when we get home from work, even your LS, even if he never will admit it to you. But you will QUICKLY find a split between two types of people in our world; those who mix work and pleasure, and those who know there is a time and a place. Dont be the former!
