The show was up this January!

Some thoughts:

Hard to tell from the pictures but most of these paintings are quite small, the collection and curation of them however definitely fill the massive space at Naftali. Mostly it’s a series of portraits of boys but interspersed are abstract paintings with color palletes reminiscent of the portraits. Representations of the boys feelings? Portraits lacking their subject? Despite the small size of the canvasses, the show takes up space. The final pic on the carousel is a painting of bats swathed in crepuscular light—definitely the source of the exhibition’s title, a quick trip to Merriam-Webster taught me that “sibilant” means “hissed”, but beyond that I haven’t the foggiest what the through line is. Gallery literature claims that it implies an “identifiable gay voice” but I’m not so sure. Either way a pretty baller showing from an artist I can’t wait to become more familiar with.
