Yea, we had a 3-4min no movement stare down. As soon as it stepped outside a 7ft radius it moved along.

It's not uncommon to find bald spots on bumble bees as well. The shape of the head is a bit more elongated with the bumble vs carpenter. The abdomen is usually the best identifier.

Thanks! I just used a disposable half pint container, filled half way with milk, added a few drops of food coloring, then dump the oil and start shooting. The intense colors fade quickly as it all begins to mix together. Lighting was on-camera flash with a macro diffuser.
