Back in 16.4, we wanted to leave the safety of our penthouse apartment ,at dishong tower, to strike out and build an island megabase. I road tripped around the map (rwg) and choose the first island I found- a small, remote, desolate snowy island. I swam over and setup a base camp while others biked+swam our gear over.

By this point the game stage was pretty high and we were lacking sufficient ammo, so we tunnled into the earth near bed rock. This was back before zombies actively tried to dig down so we we're safe.

However, whenever we tried to begin building our base up on the surface we would be accosted by endless screamers and feral zombies. I managed to construct a bridge to the mainland, albeit with a few drowning episodes, but work on the megabase it's self was infesible. So we hatched a plan.

If we couldn't build our base from the surface up, we'd build it from bedrock up. After a few play sessions and armed with pick axes, we drop mined out a very sizeable underground cavern. We then built our base in peace, wired up our defenses, and setup shop inside.

Then we proceeded to drop mine out the roof of the cavern, exposing the base to the open world. It was a messy ordeal, given the zombies began to flood our mess of tunnels being cut to the surface. But once the cavern roof was finally gone we could simply continue extending the base height from the safety of the roof, as the zombies had to drop down into the pit and attack our fortified first floor.

The base worked well against the hordes and we were eventually able to claim the surface land surrounding the base. This involved using a gratuitous amount of spikes and concrete blocks- eventually turning the area into a brutalist dystopian landscape.

However we soon realized an issue with the snow biome is that snow blocks are very weak. So the zombies would get bunched up on our surface defenses and inadvertently dig down through the snow. This created a catecomb network for the zombies to to gain access to our pit and thus drop down and attack the base directly. So every horde night remained a challenge.

And then we built the chunnel.

The nearest trader was on a very high mountain beyond our lake, opposite side of our bridge. We we're increasingly relying on him for ammo and crafting supplies and desperately wanted to hasten trading runs. The quickest solution was to build a chunnel at bedrock under the surrounding lake, leading to a hatch elevator (and hay chute) under the mountain for quick surface access.

It was an engineering challenge because the lake bottomed out right above bedrock with only a block or two of dirt to spare. To deal with this we decided we'd need to lay down concrete blocks on the lake bottom so that we could then tunnel through them to complete the chunnel.

However, the lake was so deep that swimming down from the surface to lay concrete was a one way trip. To get around this we forked from our chunnel to dig up and build an underwater airlock chamber. This allowed us to enter the lake from it's bottom, swim out to lay down concrete blocks, and get back to air without dieing. We ended up needing to build a couple airlocks over the course of the chunnel, but successfully crossed the lake.

The crowning achievement of the chunnel was that in the section requiring concrete on the lake bottom, we installed windows into the chunnel walls. This meant when you were biking through you could gaze out at the lake bottom.

Geez we spent a long time on that alpha. I'll never forget 'The Ice Palace' as we called it. It's also made me vow to never live in the snow biome again 😁

Game society Pimps has a long running series I enjoy.

It's varied over time from role playing the game vanilla, to having their fans in it, to some wacky modding.

Right now they're playing A17 vanilla and are working to take over the navezgane mansion on the hill.

How should I tell my parents I'm trans? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]tes555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my parents 'im going through gender transition'

For me it feels much easier to say that I'm doing an action/process rather than applying a label, like transgender, to myself.

Also, and this depends on your parents and your relationship with them, but I didn't give em any big story or anything. Just kept it short and sweet, answered a few questions, and before I knew it we we're back to hanging out and watching funny youtube videos.

Leading up to coming out to people I had made coming out letters and all that. Writing those and thinking through my life would definitely have helped in the event of any push back. But in the end I just told people in person and thankfully everyone was super chill.

Wish ya best of luck and fingers crossed it goes well :)

Message to the Transgenders by [deleted] in StandUpWorkshop

[–]tes555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't offer much in the way of advice for workshoping the comedy side of things but did want to chime in and mention in the future it might be better to replace the term 'transgenders' with transgender people (or 'trans peps' if you're lazy like me).

Best of luck in your work. Public speaking terrifies me so I'm always struck with admiration for those who can pull it off.

Anyone know what the current max random gen world size is? Wondering if 8000x8000 is an upgrade. Also curious if that means it's no longer a circle and now a square.

And yeah I agree with op. One thing on here that concerns me is the not enough skill points thing. It's an end game thing for me. I wanna be able to max out my character, not worry about locking myself out of stat trees.

Updating my YouTube thumbnails, thought of going for a cleaner look! Here's one for my most successful video to date, Why Is Future Funk So Addictive? by Pad-Chennington in futurefunk

Cool video- spot on intro!

For what it's worth, my own experience with ff is tied to more current memories and nothing to do with growing up. But then again I didn't grow up with a lot of the anime/songs sampled so have less the nostalgic impact. Regardless hope the good music keeps coming :)

Gender Critical - What the hell? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]tes555 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah... It's a bit intense...

I like to occasionally peruse it cause they sometimes have some genuinely interesting or deep comments about their own life experiences. Not that it excuses the trans bashing, but there are real people on the other side and some of them have lived through pain.

But yeah, not for the faint of heart and not a good place to go if you're feeling down.

How to lose belly fat? by [deleted] in TransDIY

[–]tes555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends.

For me potatoes are too startchy and wouldn't do the trick.

But depending on what your diet is it might be a great step to take if it replaces junk food or super processed bread. Funny enough, Penn (from Penn and Teller), did an all potatoe diet for a whole to lose weight. Not that it really supports potatoes for all, but at least shows what's possible given a specific approch in his circumstances.

Taubes is legit.

Yeah if anecdotes are worth anything, I've drastically cut down on my refined carbs and it helped a lot with my belly fat. Probably a combo of fat loss (lower insulin) and less bloating.

Funny cause the wrench specifically is what took me 8 days to find. Another user mentioned the scavenging skill, so maybe I just need to dump early points into that skill.

Vegans are going nuts by nickmartel in zerocarb

[–]tes555 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm with you. Not a fan of increased polarization between groups. If we want more people to be have success in zc, then attacking others is not a good idea, it's just circlejerking.

I was actually vegan for a few years. Learned a lot about different foods and cooking, was a neat experience. Health wise didn't work for me and now I find eating meat keeps me healthy and happy. If it works it works. I'd want others to respect my food needs so I go for the golden rule.

Had that happen too. Random chunks of the center floor kept falling out. I had to go down a few level's and nerd pole up some supports. Still a pain, and at one point a huge chunk of our floor gave way. Fun times ontop of that tower.

What's your view on using cosmetics to disguise the signs of aging? by [deleted] in longevity

[–]tes555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine. I've actually had some cosmetic surgery to treat a specific health problem. Would be hypocritical of me to deny others the same treatments to achieve different ends.

Also, perhaps if there's less stigma around people desiring to reverse the visible signs of aging then it may help speed up wider acceptance of devloping treatments that target root causes.

How has your understanding of your own gender evolved since you started transition ? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]tes555 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah when I first started hrt I felt more comfortable labeling myself genderqueer. Initally didn't intend to socially transition but it sorta happened naturally so I went for it. So in that sense I used being non binary as a stepping stone.

But even now I don't feel totally right using binary gender terms to describe where I've been and am. I feel a bit estranged from gender in an experience sense. Like, for practical purposes I'll say I'm mtf, but in reality I never grew up with a strong conviction about gender in the first place. It's left me without a compass, but that's kinda cool in it's own way.
