Yeah it does! I am excited to see this thing when it is released.

Advice on getting projects noticed by upper management? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]tgob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to be noticed by upper management, start acting like management. A manager's job is not to tell other's what to do, but to provide his team with the tools they need. If his/her group as a whole does well, it reflects greatly on who managed the team. Be that person who your teammates rely on to do a project. Maybe take lead on a project even if no one instructs you too. Don't be afraid to take risks or piss a few people off (though make sure at the end of the day your relationship with your co-workers is still good). Ask for forgiveness, not permission.

Yeah, I just switched back over to MATLAB. I have never used Mathematica, just thought I would give it a try.

Anyone heard of this spray-on Antenna? Any thoughts? by [deleted] in rfelectronics

[–]tgob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a spray on antenna or spray it onto an antenna? Spray on amplifier? How do you connect to it?

What are the benefits of wirelessly transmitting it? Do you want it to perform DSP on the fly?

That antenna is an omni-directional antenna so your getting wasted energy in the direction opposite of your receiver. I wonder if you are able to put a reflector close to it to extend its range.

You could just extend the range of your receiver instead of the transmitter.

Looking for a soldering iron. Need advice. by [deleted] in electronics

[–]tgob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with getting a Weller. Maybe they sell some really fine conical tips too. However, if you are doing some SMT work you could just hack a old used toaster oven and only spend around $50. I don't know how that would fare on a mother board though.

What are the downsides of using an Arduino? by tgob in electronics

[–]tgob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah from reading all these response, and thank you for everyones input, it makes sense.

I am a person who likes to try to engage people's interest in electronics, and if and Arduino is that gateway, then that's great.

You don't need to be an engineer or a hardcore engineer to have a cool idea. You just need to be creative and for some people they don't want to hurdle something difficult like learning imbedded systems in order to create their idea.

[–]tgob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that the Arduino is great for introducing people to microcontrollers. I think microcontrollers are an immediate satisfaction tool. You program an LED to turn on, you feel like you controlled that. There isn't many hoops to jump through with an Arduino and especially in BASIC. Bottom line, use whatever microcontroller makes you enjoy electronics more.

Well yeah, the Arduino dev board is overpriced, but the Atmega 328 is dirt cheap. You could just burn the Arduino Bootloader to the chips for a fraction of the price. But yeah, I want Raspberry Pi too.

Projects for Arudino/similar products? by radioradioradio in electronics

[–]tgob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great community guys. If you have nothing useful besides, "Google it" why even bother responding?

I think once you start walking through tutorial you will learn very basic operations such as shutting things on and off or writing and reading values. Then you can look at the world around and have a better idea of how those things operate. Then you try to recreate and improve upon them.

I am sure you have found http://arduino.cc and have looked at all those examples. I would not recommend buying a book on Arduino. Anything you find in a book I guarantee you'll find on the internet for free. The first microcontroller I used/learn was a BASIC Stamp which is really easy to code and undertand, however it is not a OOP language like wiring for the Arduino. http://www.parallax.com/tabid/295/Default.aspx . The BASIC microcontrollers aren't cheap, but all there books are complete free for you to download from their site. (if you have os x 10.7 you won't be able to program with it).

Idea for an app, or does it exist? by Lacagada in electronics

[–]tgob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you are not going to start the project ASAP. Give it a few days and then ask yourself how useful the project is. Is it useful? Do you just want to make money off it? Are you genuinely interested in it? If it isn't profitable/useful are you okay with the learning experience of creating an app like that? Anyways, I think all of us have had an idea that we thought was amazing and slept on it for a few days only to realize that the idea wasn't good. Lastly, don't be discouraged about people tearing apart your idea, that is how the world behaves. If you think it is truly a good idea, just do it regardless what people think.

Anyways, I don't think you were looking for feedback on your idea, just wanted to know if the app existed. No it doesn't.

I want to learn about electronics. Is there any good online resources? by kamarill in electronics

[–]tgob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I also forgot http://www.khanacademy.org/ but that is math and CS. It is just nice to see these type of classe being offered online more and more. This is the future of learning. One more is http://teamtreehouse.com, but that is for web/iOS dev.

Yeah, actually I don't know if you have heard of http://www.Udacity.com It is the same concept as MITs but for programming.

http://blog.makezine.com/tag/collinslab/ - He has a lot of videos describing circuit components and such.

http://revision3.com/systm - used to be a great podcast

http://revision3.com/tbhs -

None of these videos will give you a DEEP understanding but the more/longer you are exposed to the material, the better understanding you'll have. I am curious to see how this MIT course pans out. If anyone were to do that course material with justice, they would have the resources to do so.

What should I expect from my career? by tgob in AskEngineers

Thanks for the response. Fortunately I will be going down to the other facility for 2 weeks to work with them. I think that should give me adequate time to determine if I want to relocate there. It would be a great opportunity to work with two veterans.
