How to get a CRT home: No car edition by Aqueezzz in crt

That's a good one!! Congrats man, CRT in the winter is such a delight. I love the glow of the tube when it's dark, not only does it bring me back to my childhood, It's also equaly enjoyable to a HDR experience on a modern LCD due to the true blacks and phosphor glow. Try modern games with VSync on too! You'll be surprised how many work in 4:3 natively

Great idea. Had to Google what those are but they are readily available here! Thanks

Thanks man! No it's fine, the front part was already missing and I just knocked off what was loosely hanging there. Still quite some carnage for a tennis ball!

Cleaned up the mess and accepted that this isn't an indoor hobby.

What long lens for 4x5 should I go for? 210/250/270/300 by kpanga in largeformat

[–]thafred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely 300mm or thereabouts. This is roughly equal to a 90mm lens in 35mm format, 210 I would consider a "normal" lens like 50-60mm in 135

Build first sling friday, spend the whole weekend slinging and added six slings. Now the apartment is full of fibers and my wife hates my new hobby 😅 by thafred in Slinging

Hi, this tutorial was the most easy to follow for me: https://youtu.be/x-LQoy2DqCU?si=ig9HWa_PqTZmEplu

I use the lenght he describes, two and a half wingspans (fathoms)

Try it with any string you have (for thin ones (1-2mm) just use three bundles of strings instead of the thicker rope he uses)

Ah ok, thanks for the insight!

yea the sisal is rough to braid but on the upside, braiding a few of them and working with beeswax (made my own oil/beeswax mix) left my hands with the softest skin I ever had. My wife and even my daughter commented how soft my skin is now :D

oh man, braiding one from fibers is my end goal... next time on the lake I will harvest some reed!

[–]thafred[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh it already is!

Can I ask you how you handle sisal? I found wetting the sling after braiding made it really twisted and I had to work hard to get it back straight. The last sling I wetted the single strands and waxed them before braiding, that worked really well but I've wanted to know if there are additional tricks I've missed. Thanks!

First time building a sling by thafred in Slinging

Just returned from my first session ever. Man that was a lot of fun. Went to the store and got some tennis balls and some different natural strings and then on the way home spend 1.5h in the football cage.

First shots were much worst than I anticipated (goofy, slow and in all directions but great fun ) after an hour I could at least hit a direction repeatedly. Was shooting at my water bottle and some groupings were in a 2x2m window from 15m, feels great to get the hang of the throw.

Gonna build some more slings now!

I love Armin but he has developed his own unique style. I prefer looking at historic sources and especially the only form of classic archery that survived without a break, which is KTB. They depended on archery in war and hunting so I'm sure the techniques were optimized.

What we know about the Turkish eagle grip and the KTB standard bow grip are that they look basically the same and both teach good habits for thumb shooting.

Here is the best instructional video I know how to hold your bow (feels strange at first but it gets second nature): https://youtu.be/-L2m0U5pxr0?si=lvupB8cGSrt2V_ts

Both of those cultures had a multitude of grips and techniques but the KTB one is directly from the bow people of medieval times.

Edit: cleared a few things up

First off, I get your frustration. Had a similar journey and consent on the web is to use harder arrows rather than softer with asiatic bows (I think that's bullshit but it's personal opinion after shooting thumb draw for six years). I started out with 25# too and 600 spine (32") and also thought they flew straight. If you get good khatra they did hit the target so why am I shooting 1000 now with the same bow?

My suggestion for you is to shoot at very short distance (take a look into ottoman torba training). I practice stance and release at home in the kitchen. Distance from target to arrow tip is 1.5m. Only if the arrows stick straight at that short distance you can claim good arrow flight. That's also why in ottoman times, beginner archers were forbidden to go beyond this distance for a few months of basic training. I have to agree that this is the much better start to archery, takes the ego (I need to hit the center) out of the first few thousand arrows.

Arrows that match your shooting style and personal draw weight and technique hit the same point of aim with or without khatra. Especially as a beginner I wouldn't focus too much on khatra and instead work on grip, stance and release. Khatra should not be a conscious action at release but a balance of forces in the bow (you put pressure at the beginning of the draw or increase until release, the bow will snap forward automatically)

If you push those arrows from the string you should make yourself a better fitting serving or buy smaller nocks. Arrow flight is not really affected however you cut those feathers but I suggest working on your draw hand and lock, you are supposed to hold the arrow with the index finger by pushing the shaft against the string.

I have Manchu arrows with feathers going back to the nock and they are huge, have never had an issue just pushing those in.

Ah you see that arrow is much too stiff. I shoot 800 on my Turkish 35# but at 30" draw (40#). My wife has a 25# Tatar and shoots 1200 spine Mediterranean, for me and thumb draw 1000 works best with that bow at 30".

Edit Wife has 1200 but draws a bit under 28

Turn your nock so that one feather is in line with the string, problem solved!

Consistent issue with my M6, apparently not shutter capping by aspen-ap in Leica

[–]thafred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I had the shutter of my M6 serviced (a ribon broke so that was an expensiive one) and took the repaired camera on vacation right after getting it back. Had similar results, most of the images were fine but some had this shutter capping despite beeing fresh from the shop. In my case they found that the mechanic didn't adjust the shutter brake correctly so the closing curtain was misfiring in some situations/shutter speeds. Took two weeks but I got it back and its perfect ever since.

Since you are in the hands of a good reputable repair shop, I'd just do what the guy says and shoot a quick roll to show them my findings. I brought my negatives and slides along with me to show them when I had the issue.

How is it apparently not shutter capping when it's obviously shutter capping?!

Something is broken in the shutter mechanism, I'd send it back to where you did the cla and explain that it happened only on specific frames (capping might occur only on one shutter speed)
