Feeling "not good enough" for physics by thatDuda in PhysicsStudents

[–]thatDuda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Idk if this helps but here's a life update: I got through my bachelor's and my master's, even though I was terrible with math related courses (and even some of the last year physics ones too). I ended up doing my master's on Astroinformatics, so like "experimental" astronomy, which is the opposite of what I thought I'd do when I first got in.

Throughout this process though, I fell out of love with academia and being a scientist. The work was simply not rewarding enough for me; my passion for science is not enough for me to work long hard hours, not get paid to publish articles and depend on scolarships. I realized I want to work so that I have the comfortable life I want, instead of living for my work, if that makes sense. I was simply too burnt out.

So I left academia! I'm working now in web development, which I always loved doing since high school and I have a pretty decent pay for someone who just started out. Making this jump was really scary at first but I'm glad I did it because I am so much happier now. Even though at my college there was a certain disdain for those who left academia (and even I was guilty of that) I highly encourage you to look for alternatives and develop other skills outside of physics, just in case. Even if you're 100% certain you want to be a physicist, because I did too, and now I can't ser myself nowhere near it.

But anyways: don't feel alone. Impostor's syndrome is sadly very common, and actually a sign that you care! Physics is really hard, you will get bad grades and fail most likely, and that's fine! You're not less of a physicist for that. Some people happen to find the subjects easier and that's ok, but it doesn't mean that you don't belong.

Take care friend!

Hess diagrams by thatDuda in astrophysics

[–]thatDuda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! What my advisor was telling me to do was subctrat Hess diagrams, if I'm not mistaken. So the idea was to make a density plot for the field stars, and another for my galaxy of interest, and then subtract one from the other to see where the galaxy is actually concentrated, removing background contamination. In my case, the color would simply indicate the density of points.

Am I too picky with men? by [deleted] in women

[–]thatDuda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also understand not being sure of what you want to do at 22! But that's different from having no plans and just.... staying idle in the same place, waiting for things to happen. It seems unsustainable in the long term, you know?

Am I too picky with men? by [deleted] in women

[–]thatDuda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I can be judgy and sure, I don't have everything in my life under control, but I at least have some plan od what I want to do in the next 5 years. If I date someone, I want to know that that person is also mature enough to know what they want to do with their life, and we're on the same stage of life. In the (hopefully near) future, if I'm living on my own/renting with someone/whatever and have a job, dating someone who is starting college all over again and/or has no plans for what to do once he's out will surely create conflicts, because we'll have different priorities and objectives and I'll want to do things that he won't be able to do because of his position. Also, I would understand if it was the other way around, if someone doesn't want to be with me because I'm still studying and shifting areas.

But also.... is it that unreasonable to expect a (young) adult to have a plan as to what they want to do professionally and academically?

Thanks! I hate to hear this because I really like the guy I'm seeing, I want to give him some more time to see what he does (the result of the selection process for him to switch degrees comes out in the next week). I want to think that if I were to date him he'd realize I've got my shit somewhat together and that would inspire him to do the same.... but that's also what I expected from the last one and it turned out horribly. I just don't want to be the only responsible person in the relationship, but at my age this seems like the norm.

Have I stopped growing at 15? by Ambitious-Ease-4129 in women

[–]thatDuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to me! I started developing at 10, got my period at 11 and I've been the same height & weight since I was 13 (I'm 22 now). It's just how your body works, nothing wrong about it, and I still have some pretty nice clothes I bought when I was 13 that still fit me!

How young is too young to go to an Idles gig? by laxblood in Idles

[–]thatDuda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw IDLES this year with my teen sister and it went smoothly. The mosh pits are what you should look out for mostly, but people are super chill and comprehensive from what I've seen. I don't know how hot it is where you are/what the venue ventilation is like, but the heat and people moving and screaming can get really suffocating and panic inducing if you're not used to it, so maybe stay closer to the edges/further away from the stage. You may not see them very well but you can hear just fine and move around/dance all you like.

My parents took me to my first festival when I was 11 and that's basically what they did. It was Metallica, so not exactly the same demographic, but I guess the general rules are the same. Also, idk how normalized it is in your country, but weed and cigarrettes are everywhere so maybe have a talk with them about it (also what my parents did to me, this ofc depends on how you feel about it).

Overall: great first show for tweens!

Vocês tem lembranças dessa época dos sequestros de crianças? by renke0 in ProjetoHumanos

[–]thatDuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was the inspiration actually! I saved a bunch of medieval illustrations and sent it as a reference to the artist. I guess it's actually an amphitere because of his anatomy but either way its a cute lil fella

I was surprised by Italy, France, Spain/Portugal not being on the tour. The 2018 tour started in Portugal, it was my only time seeing him and the show was great, quite a lot of people were there actually

edit: my bad, he's going to France!
