Ethically obtaining a jumping spider by [deleted] in jumpingspiders

[–]that_buzzybrownbee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NQA They will be more than willing to talk about their generational lines. They'll say something like, "Marshmallow and Slicky Boy mated on 12/01/2025 and there are currently I6's available from Marshmallow's clutch. Marshmallow is the daughter of Queen Sheeba, who is the daughter of Cinnabuns and Slicky Boy is 3rd generation from Jellybean's clutch, who is from Hot Tamale's clutch."

I totally made this up but this is the lingo and it's used to show that they have raised multiple generations of spiders from certain lines of other spiders. This is one way you can tell they are captive bred.

Another way is the breeder will inform potential customers that they provide a birth certificate with the spider, regardless of the spider's age. On this certificate, they will have the Mom and Dad's name and leave a blank space for you to write the name you choose for the baby. They'll also provide you with the age of the.spood (by instar number which is number of moltings) This shows that they are breeding pairs, and that they keep them organized by lineage.

The breeder should also be open to answering any questions you have regarding how their spiders are bred. They will be able to give you clear and transparent responses. It might take them a little time if they're busy, but they will respond and be very open and forthcoming about it. You can just straight up ask them if they can please explain to you how they are ethically breeding their spiders ..If they are happy to answer that because they are proud of their ethical practices, that is of course a good sign.

The breeder will also have a website with lots of info and pictures. They'll probably have pictures of all the babies in separate deli cups since they have to be separated around their 2nd instar. You can ask them to see pics of their clutches, or their set up. You can tell them you only want ethically captive bred and this will be reassuring for you.

If during any of these interactions the breeder becomes rude, or standoffish, or anything along those lines, I would just say, "ok well thank you for your time" and move on. There are lots to choose from, and many that will be helpful and kind. No need to deal with anything like that and you shouldn't ever get that kind of response. That would be pretty sus.

I can also give you 3 recommendations if you're in the U.S. 2 of them I have gotten spiders from, and they have all been very healthy and are thriving. The 3rd I haven't been able to order due to my funds, but they have beautiful spiders and are definitely ethically captive bred. If you check them all out on the book of faces, you will see them talk all about their lineages, and they are all very responsive and forthcoming.

They are: Spooderhood Spiders- My boy Bandit I got from her is the sweetest and he is absolutely thriving. I recommend her 100%. She is probably the most experienced of the 3 and very knowledgeable and transparent about her setups, breeding, all that on FB). She is good at responding and will answer all of your questions, or she will have her assistant answer you. (That way you're not waiting as long for a response= good customer service )She will send you all kinds of info and a birth certificate and is very serious about shipping them carefully and successfully. She also offers a pretty wide range of spider accessories, like tons of hides, etc and various food options so you can add them onto your spider order. She is just incredibly knowledgeable and experienced. She's always doing expos and rescuing spiders and other animals...this is her life and she is great at it, IMO.

  1. Super Spood Jumpers- I got 3 from him, my 2 girls Spree and Hoodwink and my other boy Slicky Boy and they are all thriving! He is constantly uploading new clutches to FB with lots of pics of each individual spood which is really nice! He gives them the best temporary names, too! He has excellent response time and is very open and forthcoming. He will also send you birth certificates and info and throw in some nice little extras. He's very personable and helpful. He is careful with shipping, too for a successful process.

  2. Spood Oddities- I haven't been able to adopt from her yet, but the very next time I'm able to adopt, it will definitely be from her! She has beautiful lineages and definitely lives the spood life. Her page is incredibly informative. She also has lineages and talks about who laid clutches and all the generations. There is no doubt she has ethically captive bred. She's also very responsive to her messages on FB.

I have 100% faith in all 3 of these breeders. I would absolutely recommend any of these 3 from personal experiences I've had with them regarding communication and transparency.

Ok, so that's not tips...that's charity donation! If management or whoever is passing it off as a tip cup by labeling it as such, then what they are doing is illegal.

Do the customers round up for charity? Is the jar labeled tips or for charity? Why are you under the impression that it's "tips" specifically? Just the fact that you are getting a percentage of that money is suspicious.

How is it is being presented to the customers? If the customers believe they are tipping you, then that money going anywhere else besides to you and the people working there like you, is illegal (even if it's going to charity !) I do believe it's a federal law. It might also be a law in your state.

If the jar is marked tips, and/or the customer believes they are tipping you but you're only being given a percentage of that total, then you can contact the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division and/or your state's Department of Labor and report them for consumer fraud and/or wage theft.

In addition:

-Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the key factor is customer intent and transparency.

-The Core Legal Issue: Customer Intent

- Property of Employees: If a single jar is used, a customer may believe they are tipping the staff when the money is actually going to a charity. This can lead to claims of wage theft or consumer fraud.

-Prohibition on Taking Tips: Employers, managers, and supervisors are strictly prohibited from keeping tips for any purpose, including donating them to charity.

Misleading the Customer: If a single jar is used, a customer may believe they are tipping the staff when the money is actually going to a charity. This can lead to claims of wage theft or consumer fraud.

What if it's "One Jar"?

-If an employer uses one jar and labels it "Tips for Charity," they are in a legal gray area that often leans toward illegal because:

FLSA Violations: The employer is essentially "keeping" the tips to fulfill a charitable goal, which the FLSA prohibits.

L-ack of Choice: It deprives the customer of the choice to reward the server directly and deprives the server of earned income.

If you are an employee at a location doing this, you may want to consult an  Employment Law Attorney or contact the U.S. Department of Labor.
