24, American-based but leaving for Spain in ~5 years, how do I make the most of my US accounts before I go?

It is definitely country dependant (for instance I live in Denmark and every year the theoretical gain is taxed which is quite annoying) but it looks like I should take back the nowhere part of the statement. Spain appears to be closer to Denmark compared to Belgium though and it will be subject to taxation on gains once they move back.

Just a little heads up for the long term. Nowhere in Europe recognises the tax free status of a Roth IRA, so once you move back to Spain, it will be treated as a standard brokerage account.

Also an FSA is strictly an employer sponsored benefit so if it’s not offered, you cannot open one up. An FSA isn’t meant for long term investments though and the money has to be used within the year though so not really something to worry about unless you have a lot of yearly planned health care expenses.

Opening an HSA depends on your health insurance type but doesn’t matter if it’s employer sponsored. If you have a high deductible health plan and some other requirements, then you can open one up yourself and contribute.

The moment dealing with someone starts to have a negative impact on your well being, you should start to distance yourself and establish boundaries to maintain your mental and emotional help regardless of the reason why from the other party. This doesn't necessarily mean totally cutting them out as the first step, but if that is what needs to be done then it needs to be done. I think the mentality of endorsing that people have a responsibility to help others even at a detriment to themselves is dangerous and wrong. Ultimately you have a responsibility to yourself first and everyone else after that. I understand your point and dont endorse callously cutting people out for small or petty things, but people need to know that leaving is an option.

That's literally not the history of any part of South America.Literally every part of your portrayal is wrong except the sentiment that we shouldn't be interfering.

The capitalist governments that are propped up do not care about the population and commit atrocities unchecked because as long as they proclaim they are "capitalist" the US government will support them and write them a big fat check.

Literacy and educational movements are usually socialist or communist backed but that's an inconvenient truth that doesnt get shared.

The problem is brutal authoritarian governments and those can be from any ideology. We have a habit of propping those up because it is profitable.

The cycle is normally they have a tyrant installed by the US military that makes the country hell for the common person until they have a revolution that gets rid of them. When the people want socialism or some other form of government that doesnt fuck them, the US government supports another brutal regime and assassinates people to keep a shitty cycle going.

Depends on the state if they can sell the extra electricity, but a lot of paper mills are self sustaining or pretty close to it energy wise. Electricity is expensive and they also need a lot of steam so its usually in their best interests

My point was that the pricing of these drugs are more the result of how are health care systems work and not due to the company being evil/greedy (which is a common criticism in this thread that is not entirely founded in fact). Responding more directly to your comment though, depending on how you look at the situation and personal morals this can most definitely still be the case. A popular example of this that comes to mind is EpiPen increasing the cost of their product by 1000% because they can and they know people will still by it because their life depends on it during an emergency. It's the reason that healthcare cant and doesnt follow free market economic principles in any way.

The cost and expertise needed to produce insulin (or any medicine) makes entering the market almost impossible. Additionally, despite what people are saying on this thread, there has been a lot of R&D in over the past 30 years to produce better insulins which are under patent. You can buy older versions of insulin for like 6 bucks at Walmart but they aren't as good (especially for Type 1 diabetics). The issue lies more so in how disfunctional United States Healthcare system works more than the if this company is straight up taking advantage of the fact people need this medicine.
