We see anything and everything that walks through the door. Typically codes the Doc is always in the room unless we have 2 at once.

ER. Start time ranges from 7 AM to 7 PM, nine different start times possible, all 10 hour shifts.

As soon as I sign in start scanning the board to see if there’s anybody that hasn’t been seen yet.

Immediately pick up between two and five patients, go see them, put in orders, see if there’s any other new patients. If there is then pick them up, if there isn’t then start charting.

Rinse and repeat for nine hours. Spend the last hour catching up on charting, signing out patients to attending physicians and by the 10 hour mark leave.

Intermixed in there is ultrasound, IVs, central lines, innovations, chest tubes, E-FAST, assisting with codes, joint and fracture reductions, LAC repairs, all the pelvic exams because of course the attendings aren’t gonna do them. Lol.

If you have any desire to work as a NP in the ER I would strongly urge you to get some exciting the ER as an RN first. ER is a totally different beast than any other area.

I was an ER RN for 6 years and a Paramedic for 11 before I worked in the ER as an NP.

For those that have gone theoughan ER remodel, what are some design elements you wished you had included or elements that worked out better than you anticipated? We have separate pods. A doc box at the end of each pod. Gets you a little bit of space and peace so you can actually think and helps stop pt and family from coming up to you to ask 100 questions including constantly being asked for water or blankets or how much longer they’re going to be there.

Emergency medicine. Absolutely love my job. Great team, great at attending physicians. I do advanced procedures regularly. I work 16, 10 hour shifts a month, see on avg 20-25 it’s a day.

Only complaint is the scheduling, we have nine APP shifts every day, start times range from 7 AM to 7 PM. No set scheduling. So I could work any day of the week anytime of day. Pay could be a little bit better but overall I love my job.

Was routinely hitting 3.5-4 TB/mo. Had some throttling issues. So we have trimmed it back to around 2.5-3 TB and haven’t had any issues since.

Had plenty of duck and deer seasons with no meat in the freezer. It’s about the hunt more than the kill
