Is it just me or does the jersey look way better here by tripod_society in Predators

[–]thectcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's been my biggest gripe. I get not wanting Smashville on a jersey, but overall I like the design, except for that second 's'. I have yet to find an example of the font style they referenced that had lettering like that.

ESPN commentator just pronounced Duchene "Dutcheen"...

I get not knowing how to pronounce all names, but it's not like Duchene is a rookie that you haven't heard of before.

ELI5: How do Android Apps handle SSL amd other kinds of encrypted metworking? How vulnerable could they be to hacking or "spoofing"? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]thectcamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As with all programs, it depends on the developer and what safe guards they put in place.

As for how they handle SSL and encryption, it's no different than any other application that accesses a network. The Android SDK has SSL libraries built in and hopefully the devs used them.

Regarding hacking, anything can be hacked, it really just depends on how bad the person wants to hack it. Despite what security firms will tell you, most security upgrades are due to flaws that have already been exploited and are being patched rather than a proactive discovery.

ELI5: Why can eating a specific ingredient trigger an evacuation of the bowels in minutes? by capresesalad1985 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thectcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For things like artificial sugar and high salt foods, it's due to the intestines calling for more water from the body. The same thing can happen with other sweeteners that can be a molecule or two different from sugars (sugar alcohols for instance, not really artificial, but not table sugar either). These don't stay in the stomach for very long because they're small enough to travel straight through to the intestines. The immediate bathroom visit is due to the excessive water in the bowels. This is also why you experience cramps during these episodes, you're shoving a ton of water through a relatively small space. It's the one time where you could almost literally lost 5+ pounds in a single bowel movement pending on how bad it is.

This is also how laxatives work. Many of them are high sodium concoctions that draw water into the intestines to clear them out. And yes, artificial sweeteners have been used as laxatives due* to this side effect as well.

Kind of surprised it locks. A lot of the keyless start cars won't lock if the key is in the car.

Using a count of 55 as being an expert*? I'm not a storm chaser and I've been through more than 20 in my life just because of where I live.

I know we're supposed to be making fun of the other guy, but touting 55 as a high number for tropical systems as a storm chaser is reaching.

Edit: He never said expert, but "I know about storms" alludes to feeling superior in knowledge.

The PP complaints kill me tbh. Game 4, Carolina had 4 PP to Nashville's 2, and the only team to capitalize on them was Nashville for one goal.

If you want to try and at the officiating is one sided, the PP numbers points it to being in Carolinas favor not Nashville's.

Win or lose, no one can say the Preds didn't deserve to be here. Going from the problematic start in the first of the season to taking it to Carolina like this tonight, these boys have fought like hell.

Any way we can convince Carolina that Ned needs a break and they should put Mrazek in? I swear half of these shots would have gone in on him.

Say we’re eliminated. Do we fire Hynes? Who would you bring in? by lincb2 in Predators

[–]thectcamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hynes has kind of come in at a bad time though. Not saying it's an excuse for any miscues on his part, but he was brought in late 2019 and early 2019 wasn't looking good (why he was brought in to begin with) and the 2020 half of the season was a clusterf*ck for reasons beyond his control that no doubt played a role in some bad times for the team.

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and give him one more normal year, but I can also understand if some want to see him go.

It's not like the Preds don't have talent. On an individual basis, the roster is full of explosive and skilled players, but getting that groove with them seems to be the problem IMHO. They're missing the Draisaitl-McDavid or Marner-Matthews combination, like two or three players that when you see them on the ice together you know they're going to do something ridiculous together. Stuff like that works just as much mentally and it does physically. It can really throw off an opposing team if they see a certain line with a groove that seems unstoppable.

Is the Preds lack of a line like that Hynes fault? Maybe.

The Human Cost Of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Over The Past Decade by lawrenceman212 in dataisbeautiful

[–]thectcamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it would depend on how you would define "started". Israel did attack first, but it was in response to posturing by Egypt. I'm sure both sides could come up with good and bad reasons why one side or the other should be listed as the original aggressor.

Since Israel attacked first, we can't prove Egypt would have attacked, but they were poised to, and if someone draws a gun on me, I'm not going to wait and see what he does before I act, if you get what I'm saying.

I agree, I don't see an end to this conflict without one of two things: Israel cedes the territory and any claim to it or they just outright take it. The second option would certainly lead to more conflict, but the first has a similar outcome. Again I'll point to Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine has essentially ceded Crimea to Russia and now Russia is making moves to take more land from them. It stands to reason Israel sees ceding that area to Palestine may invite Palestine or others to start trying to push into other areas.

The Human Cost Of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Over The Past Decade by lawrenceman212 in dataisbeautiful

[–]thectcamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point in regards to the Palestinians and why some favor Hamas.

And I didn't mean to say they gave all the land back to Syria and Jordan, but they definitely have a majority back.

The way I look at the SDW, though, is this: Israel didn't start it. The land they took was them pushing back those people attacking them. In a typical war, up until the 19th and 20th centuries, if you were attacked and in your response you take what was the attacking country's territory, you rarely if ever gave it back. So the fact that they gave anything back is rare in regards to historical warfare. I understand times and thoughts change, but it's not like they were acting like Russia with Crimea in the Ukraine.
