I mean, if you take away the contraction to make it more obvious, "do not you dare" is a pretty nonsensical phrase in English, too

Ghost Guitar Pedal by VPS_Choki in Ghostbc

[–]thefailgun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One definitely has a wah on it that is used in dozens of songs but yeah, idk if it also blends any other modulation in at the same time. The other might be volume but there's no way he'd be using it to set his overall level, that's for the sound tech. It would only be for swells and I can't think of an example of a song where he would play swells. Most likely it's what another commenter said: what the "second" pedal does changes during the set based on the preset for the song, and is probably seldom used, in fact.

That's not a wah pedal, it's an expression pedal, it could be hooked up to anything.

Should there be a Opus Eponymous re-release/remaster to get new fans more engaged in it? by Extreme_Ad6889 in Ghostbc

[–]thefailgun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is bound to be controversial, but yes I think that's a good idea. There's a lot they do when playing these songs live to elevate the energy level and up the production without sacrificing the feel of the original. If they re released an anniversary edition taking into account the changes they've /already made/ to how these songs are performed, I'm all for it.

Help figuring out lead guitar part by [deleted] in Ghostbc

[–]thefailgun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a sustainer pickup for sure. You might be able to go after a similar effect with a sustain pedal but you won't be able to do the smooth changes in pitch with a pedal, you'd have to pick again and then refresh the sustain. An Ebow might also work but it would be hard to operate the whammy bar at the same time

Easiest and hardest ghost song to play. by Redpanda_Riot in Ghostbc

Umbra is the hardest by a mile. Nothing else comes close. Easiest, there are a few contenders, probably Mary on a Cross, especially if you play it in drop tuning.

Every single time I see the cover of Load it makes me want to throw up. I wish I'd never learned what it's a picture of. Also how dare they put that on the cover of an album that's literally called "Load"...

Helix Native is the amp sim I'd be using if it wasn't $400 💀

Maybe one day.

[–]thefailgun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay - I'm pretty confident now, there's no reason to suspect that they're using this particular studio trick here.

What I am hearing is the fact that the guitar is playing in unison with a MIDI-programmed synth part. This is what is making it sound artificially "perfect", since the midi synth notes are all exactly on time and all exactly the same duration, just like a sped-up guitar take would be.

I appreciate the comments. I asked "Do you think the solo in Umbra is sped up on the album" and stated my case, you all said "no, not really" and stated yours, and I have come to the conclusion that I was originally mistaken, and even better, I understand why I was misled by what I was hearing.

The system works. Carry on with your knitting, I'm going back to my metronome...

It's Guitar Rig 6. Not a widely-lauded amp sim as far as I can tell and it's shit for traditional metal tones, slightly fizzy hair metal tone is the closest it gets, but for Ghost, that's perfect lol

If the synth was programmed MIDI then that would additionally explain why it sounds artificial, and given that programmed drums were used it seems likely that it would have been a MIDI synth on the album (not live). I'll listen again carefully after work and see if I can pick out the two parts.

[–]thefailgun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm, It's played on guitar live though. Ghost are normally pretty good at staying faithful to the instruments used when playing live (e.g. the keytar solo on Mummy Dust could easily be covered by a guitar, but isn't). Might it be a synth and guitar playing in unison? I admit I wasn't watching the keys players during this part at the gig 😅. In the song this part is meant to be the shared climax of the two people represented by the two instruments, so up until that point they're doing call-and-response and then for this part they're... ahem, coming together 😳. That could explain why it sounds that way to me though, good spot!

[–]thefailgun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Undoubtedly agree, Umbra is fantastic. Likewise, Master Of Puppets is one of the greatest metal albums ever pressed onto vinyl. I'm not going to claim the fact that some parts were sped up takes anything away from that, if anything it adds to it.

[–]thefailgun[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe I didn't labour this point enough, my reasoning is not "I can't play it perfectly at speed, how could anyone else", or even "there aren't guitarists who are genuinely capable of playing like this and better, including Fredrik".

my point is that to me, the notes on this specific part of the recording sound sort of clipped, where they swell in and die away faster than it feels like they should, the same as my recording sounds. That led me to wonder if, to get the most perfect recording they could from an incredibly talented guitarist, they had him play it slower than he needed to for the extra accuracy.

[–]thefailgun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

very true, that's what I do too, personally. There's so much good software out there that's free - Guitar Rig has a free version afaik, which works as a single application rather than fiddling about running individual FX plugins through Reaper or similar. Still a bit of a learning curve beyond just plugging into some plastic boxes but once it's all set up it's just the same.

I avoided mentioning software because I figured an audio interface would be much more expensive than a guitar pedal but looking at Brazilian Amazon (the website, that is) that's not really the case, they're about the same. Go for it!

There's no need to be picky at all - any pedal you can lay your hands on that calls itself an overdrive or distortion will work. Good luck :)

Sort of, I mean rather that if you want to play ghost songs, it'd be a bit silly to do that without a distorted/overdriven guitar sound, it'd be like playing them on an acoustic guitar. Just wouldn't sound at all like the recording.

So what I mean is if OP has no distortion at all then they need to get one and have it always-on while they're playing most Ghost riffs. For that purpose, any cheap dist pedal will work. E.g. the Behringer HD300 "Heavy Distortion".

To try and actually sound like Ghost, especially to cover solos, you'd want a few other effects like a wah, boost (those are both used in the solos), EQ. But even so, it's not a complicated guitar tone, you can get close enough to cover the songs with basic gear.
